Mortal Kombat 11 is the first third party game in fourteen years to take the #1 software spot on Nintendo hardware

Hasn't happened since the GameCube days

Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game on the Switch in the United States for April 2019. Seeing a third party title top the Switch list was pretty damn fantastic! Hell, seeing any third party title top the software list for Nintendo hardware is something that rarely happens. As a matter of fact, its been 14 years since it last happened!

NPD's Mat Piscatella revealed that the last time a third party title took the #1 software spot for Nintendo hardware was back in Feb. 2005, which is when Resident Evil 4 took that honor on the GameCube.

And after everything the developer did, it doesn't even remotely deserve to be there.

That is crazy. And also somewhat fitting that RE4 was the last game to do it.

That was the last time an M RATED third party game (not last rated M rated game, that was Bayonetta 2) topped the AMERICAN Nintendo charts.
Last third party game was Mario + Rabbids.

It's still incredible news that a third party M rated game has topped the Switch US charts for the first time in the past 14 years, but third party sales on Nintendo systems aren't THAT bad.

(Also, US is important since of course its happened many times in Japan, with stuff like Dragon Quest, Yokai Watch, and Mon Hun)

100% correct on the fact that third parties have topped Nintendo console NPD charts after Resident Evil 4. Sonic, Skylanders, Lego, Rock Band and Guitar Hero games have all achieved that in the last 14 year, among any other on-offs like Disney Infinity 1.

I do cast doubt that Bayonetta 2 topped the Wii U chart in its first month in October 2014. I think Skylanders Trap Team or Mario Kart 8 did, though there were no Wii U specific charts at that time to confirm that (Just PS4, XB1 and 3DS). The only number I saw for Bayo was 60-something thousand, which also an estimation. Also, the Switch version was outsold by Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda in its debut month of February 2018.

I got the thing on Bayonetta 2 from Matt Piscatella's twitter, so I''d trust that.

Yeah, with you on this one. I mean, the gameplay looks good. Story mode seems fascinating in it's funny way (old meats new) and thr graphics are truly great. Also, the Switch port has a lot effort in it. I applaud all that, but... And that BUT is big. Damn that always online crap when in single player mode. Seriously! At least they patched the grinding a bit. Oh and how much DLC will this game get? Hear it's going to get a LOT! Oh and a little computer generated female skin is Satan himself, but shitloads of CG gore is the awsomeness... Sheesh. OK, I love the gore in these games, of course, but blaah. I'll just wait for the Komplete edition for some cheap money and see then. I was so looking forward to this game after X, which was awesome.

Yeah, publishers continue to enact more and greater consumer hostile business practices because there's no consequences. Then they become standard practices. It's a bummer.

I still condone the buy it used on eBay route to punish them.

This is both good news and also quite damning. Good that a 3rd party title on Switch has reached number 1 but damning that it's been so long since the last time. There's also no comparison between the 2 games, Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece, while Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch has numerous issues, not least being that its physical release is a joke, with over half the game as a digital download.

What other issues does the Switch version actually have? The port in itself seems to be one of the best ports for multiplat games so far and all the modes and everything seems to be intact.

Well I hope Switch owners aren't dumb enough to buy into the progression crap. PS4 and Xbox One owners too
Also hope the developers take a nice long vacation out of this
