Super Mario Maker stages created in the Wii U/3DS versions cannot be transferred to Super Mario Maker 2

Starting from scratch

If you created stages you absolutely loved in Super Mario Maker on Wii U or 3DS, we're sad to tell you that those stages will stay put on the platforms where they were created. Nintendo confirmed that stages created in Super Mario Maker Wii U/3DS cannot be played or imported into Super Mario Maker 2. This is due to the inclusion of multiple new features and items in Super Mario Maker 2.

Does the Switch even have the ability to connect with the Wii U and 3DS?

They would probably have to do a transfer app like they did for Monster Hunter 3 save data.

Have the app read the save data on your Wii U for staged, then from there you upload your choice of stages to a server and if your Nintendo Account is linked with your Wii Us NNID, you can download them from Mario Maker 2. But then you have the problem of actually getting the stages to work in the new game, which is likely way too much work for the few people who will use it.

Well the levels are stored on Nintendo's servers. You can see them all on the Super Mario Maker bookmark site. You can link your NNID from Wii U to the Switch, surely they could have found a workaround for this. The 3DS levels are irrelevant because you could never upload those online anyway.

Either way, it's not a deal breaker for me because I didn't expect they would be carried over. What I'd rather see is for the next Animal Crossing to allow us to import stuff from the previous game. I think that would be more useful than this.

It's a bit of a bummer, but I expected it. For anything I was proud of in the last game, I would probably want to rebuild and improve it for Mario Maker 2 anyway.
