Game Freak says no decision has been made to bring non-Galar Region Pokemon into Pokemon Sword & Shield via an update

A tiny sliver of hope

If you were holding onto hope that non-Galar Region Pokemon could make an appearance in Pokemon Sword & Shield via a post-game update, you'll have to hold your breath awhile longer. Famitsu has an interview with various members of Game Freak, and when they were asked this question, Game Freak's devs stated that they have not made a decision on the matter at this time. They did go on to say that those Pokemon not supported in the game will still have an active role via Pokemon HOME.

I was telling someone last night that I think Game Freak is being sincere when they say there's concerns over balancing and overall workload.

Problem is that this is one of those cases where no answer, no matter how sympathetic, is gonna placate a certain camp of fans. It's Pragmatism Vs. Fanaticism.

And while I do think criticism is valid and can get results, it can be a monkey's paw as well. Something might have to give in order to have all 800+ Pokemon in a mainline...

I figured Home was a nice middle ground, because, not only is it cloud storage and a trading hub, but it can easily be THE National Dex completionists want, while game devs regain some flexibility.

That's a hard pass for me.

An active role lol. They want you to transfer everything to HOME, where then half of your stuff is just stuck there, can't go back to bank or any previous game, can't go to sword/shield. Can be traded and that's it.

I'm not even an avid pokemon gamer or massive fan and even I can tell this is incredibly stupid and see no merit in it at all.
HOME... More like PRISON!

Terrible! Terrible! TERRIBLE!

On one hand I can understand the pickle they're in: They're approaching 1000 characters that need to be rigged and animated for each game. THAT IS AN ASTRONOMICAL UNDERTAKING. And that's not counting all the non-pokemon characters in the game. THAT, and "catching 'em all" is becoming nearly impossible to the player unless you have a continuing stock of older pokemon getting transferred in from older games. Pokemon as we knew it seems unsustainable.

On they other hand, they HAD to know players want all their Pokemon together. How could the be happy any other way? It's the theme of the game!

For the past couple of Pokemon games I've felt like it needed a soft reboot and a drastically decreased pokedex, with only the most popular older pokemon being carried over. But I know that would piss off anybody whose favorite didn't make it in. But it looks kind of like this is what they're doing. Tentatively, I'm fine with it (my favorite one is confirmed to be in it!) but I'll be interested in seeing how other people handle it.

Well said. I think there are some realities the biggest Pokemon fans are going to have to face, and I think Game Freak and Nintendo will just have to hope they can accept it.

As for Home, I hope you're right. I didn't understand why they needed Home when they already had the Bank, but maybe it has some other functions besides storage and transfers... and it needs to, because I hate the idea of Pokemon being stuck there because they're not in the Galar Pokedex and can't be transferred back into their native game.

It's not like any of the old Pokémon even have new animations or anything. They've been using exactly the same 3D models since X and Y.

I understand their decision but I think it's a terrible one, and I really hope they change their minds.

But knowing them, they probably won't update Sword & Shield, instead they'll save the "new and exciting feature" to promote the inevitable enhanced versions.

I say Pokemon Company hire Thanos to fix the problem...Snap away half of the Pokemon from existence. I call that mercy...perfectly balanced as all Pokemon should be..
