Damn! They still got a looong (rainbow) road ahead of 'em...

Mario Kart DS and Wii have INSANE numbers!
Combining 8 + 8 DX is not that fair, but ok, lol.

Given that MK8D has been selling over 1+ million units per quarter (except on the holiday quarter when it sells about 3 million units), I believe on its own it will surpass 7 and DS relatively soon. Then it will steadily rise to reach and surpass Wii, which has sold absurd numbers, but took a really long time to get there as well.

As has already been mentioned, it's not fair to combine sales of MK8 and MK8D. The only thing they really changed in Deluxe was to fix the borked Battle Mode, which they could have easily done on Wii U, but then... another €60. Plus it gives the game 2 generation of sales, but that too raises further arguments.

I think that makes it MORE appropriate to combine their sales, since they're almost exactly the same game. It's like combining the sales of Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire.

What makes it a LESS helpful statistic is the fact that they're on two different consoles, and some people likely bought both versions. Still, as far as sales go it technically counts.

I have such bitter memories of Mario Kart Wii. It's easily my least favorite Mario Kart, and yet there it is right at the top. I hope Mario Kart 8 can eventually beat it, but I doubt it would happen without bundling it with the Switch for free or putting out more DLC to rekindle interested.

I would ABSOLUTELY buy more courses to race on.
