Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield to no longer support Global Link, will be switching to Pokémon Home instead

The Pokémon Company has issued a statement regarding their upcoming Pokémon Sword & Shield games and how they will no longer support the Pokémon Global Link:

Hello there, Trainers! Thank you for using our products and services. We have some information regarding Pokémon Global Link (PGL) and the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games, which will release for Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.

For Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, services equivalent to the current Rating Battle and Online Competitions are planned to be supported. However, PGL will not support Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

These battles and Online Competitions can be enjoyed in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield using just the connectivity features of Nintendo Switch* Game Sync will not be required for these new games. For more information on Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, visit the official site.

In addition, functionality from PGL to view services such as Rankings, Distribution Regulations, and the events calendar will be provided through Pokémon HOME, which is planned for release on iOS and Android devices in early 2020.

Please look forward to more details about Pokémon HOME coming soon!

Good riddance honestly. Did not like using that website.

Good riddance honestly. Did not like using that website.

Same here! I was about to comment that it’s easier that way because it’s a pain in the butt to log in all the time. Plus, you get lost in the site sometimes.

Seriously, why are people downvoting this, omfg?

The Global Link site was a mess, the only reason we had to use it before was because of the DS and 3DS's limited tech. Now it's all done in-game, as it should've been from the beginning. No more registering to an external site and having to link each game and all that tedious stuff.

There are lots of valid aspects to complain about Sword & Shield, but this is an improvement!

I'm assuming the downvote is because of the complains and so unless game freak does something to fix that, it's gonna get all the bashing it can get.

People will downvote anything for a game they look forward to NOT having something, regardless of how necessary or well-liked it actually is.

Though to be honest, I at first read it as "Global Trade Station," and I would've also said "Good riddance" to that due to how chock full of stupid impossible or unreasonable trades it is.

It was nice when you could use that website to win ingame items via Flash games etc. But that feature is long gone anyway.

I'm just concerned they don't mention Home coming to the Switch or 3DS. I wonder how the Bank to Home transfer will happen

Most news from spring report that Home was announced for Switch and Mobile, though I can't seem to find the original press release.

I remember the same thing, but this latest one didn't include the Switch. Let us hope they get Home right

It will likely just be available on smart phones. You'll connect your 3DS/Switch to the app.

I just hope it works, but if I could have it my way, there would be an app on the Switch as well.

I'm pretty sure they mentioned it would be available for Switch. I don't have the official source here but it says so in its Bulbapedia page.

I'm growing more and more weary of Pokemon Home

I just want it to have a prettier interface than Bank did so I can feel good about keeping my Living Dex there, since I won't be able to do it in Sword...

I expect Bank at 720p and they will probably up the subscription rate

Not sure if you actually meant weary, or meant wary. Do you just hear too much news about it, or do you feel like it might be bad?

Global Link site was a mess. Hope that Home does at least marginally better
