GN Version 5.0

THQ Nordic played through 50 minutes of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated! at Gamescom 2019, and they shared a host of new info on the game's development and features. Check out a rundown of everything discussed below.

– The team isn’t trying to do a massive overhaul and change the original experience; it’s really about the small details
– They want it to be playable in a modern way while maintaining the feel of the original
– Working a lot on the camera so players don’t have to control the camera that much
– Will have a ledge hold
– Looking at deep difficulty spikes the original game had
– Restoring scenes and segments cut from the original like the robo Squidward fight from the concept art
– Will have a longer version of Patrick’s dream; this was a broken level you could enter if you hacked into the original game
– Unsure about a demo/beta, but may be possible for the new multiplayer horde mode
– Horde modes supports local play and online
– Defeat robots in this mode as SpongeBob, Sandy, or Patrick
– King jellyfish boss fight now makes it clearer when he’s vulnerable to being attacked
– Making it easier in terms of save points and pixel perfect jumping of the original
– There will still be a challenge
– Visuals have been updated, including the character models which have more detail
– Aware of speedrunning interest, but the team doesn’t want to make the game intentionally glitchy or break the game
– 100% new creation, but doing side-by-side with the original to make sure it’s a 1:1 version of it
– May have a collector’s edition
– Not confirming cheat codes, but they wouldn’t be out of place so they could be possible
– More SpongeBob games possible, but the team is currently focusing all of its attention on this project
– Purple Lamp itself is interested in working further with SpongeBob more in the future
– First SpongeBob movie game could be tricky to work with because it’s from Paramount while the others are from Nickeolodeon
– Cutscenes are being restored from the original including the English voicework, now with more polish and detail
– New German dub with the actors from the series
– Targeting 60 frames per second
– Currently in pre-alpha, so the game will be going through a lot of revisions
– Release window is just 2020
