Has compression come that long since last gen, because Ni no Kuni was around 20GB on PS3. Hope they haven't skimped out on features like dual audio or that the Ghibli-animated sequences have been compressed to hell and back.

More likely, it's that they put more of an effort into compression for Ni no Kuni than when on the PS3 rather than compression becoming more advanced.

While I'm not a programmer so I don't know if I'm way off the mark, I've been seeing some games over these past two or three generations that have incredibly large file sizes for the size of the games themselves, and they suggest to me that they don't consider compression that big a deal. One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a game you can beat in about 7 hours and is slightly larger in file size than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

That's a good point. As long as a game fit onto a single layer blu-ray disc last gen, unless it was a multiplatform game, they didn't really need to bother with compression at all.
