Xbox GM of games explains Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition coming to Switch, says there's no plans to bring over the sequel

One and done

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition was confirmed for Switch a few weeks back, finally putting the end to all the rumors.
Its a game that seems right at home on Switch, and Microsoft couldn't agree more. Xbox GM of games marketing Aaron Greenberg explained the situation to MCVUK in a recent interview.

“Ori is built by Moon Studios, which is an independent, external studio. They came to us with a desire to bring the original Ori to the Switch. We thought that made sense, and we’re happy to work with them to enable them to bring that to Switch. We understand their desire to bring that game to Switch, and in this particular case we were happy to support them. And we think that makes sense for the original Ori.”

Does this mean that the sequel is heading to Switch? According to Greenberg, that's not the case.

“Our plans with Ori and the Will of the Wisps is to launch exclusively on Xbox One and on the PC.”

I think people should understand that MS and Ninty are buddies, not the same company. They are still rivals. So it would not be a good idea for them to release their newest games on other platforms than their own, and port later.

The way he worded that response kinda gives me a little bit of hope that it will come to Switch some day down the line Smile

Maybe if Ori 3 was coming soon to XBOX.

Agree. Whoever thought Halo would ever come on a Nintendo console is taking crazy pills.

Hehe. Well perhaps the older games could hit the Switch one day for extra sales, but the Switch will never get the newest entries.

Depends to be honest. If they are sure that they are not gonna sell any of their own consoles, them placing a game on other platforms increases their potential profit. Halo, on the other hand, is a series that sells Xbox so it's not a reasonable thing to reduce their potential profit by selling it to another ecosystem and not encourage them to buy a console they might have otherwise done.

I was talking about the old Halo games from the original Xbox. They could sell on Switch AND Scarlet(new Xbox)/Xbox One.

It'll launch exclusively on the Xbone and PC, then a year or so down the line it'll be announced for the Switch if Blind Forest sells well enough. Personally I hope Ori's sales on Switch absolutely slaughter it on Xbone, just to prove a point.

Makes sense. It’s more a marketing move for Microsoft to promote the new game and in turn their own console, nothing wrong with that. Same with Banjo in Smash- a really cool thing for Nintendo fans that also tells them “hey, if you want to play Banjo Kazooie on a modern console you’re gonna need an Xbox One.”

Anything we see from Microsoft will most likely be games that help promote new games they’re making for Xbox, help promote their consoles; or are games that have already sold as well as they’re ever going to on their platform like Cuphead. So there’ll be no speak of the Ori sequel for a fair amount of time if it ever happens.

For me personally... that just kills any interest I would have in the game on a Nintendo console. I appreciate the up front honesty though.

I hope The Delicious Last Course comes to both Switch and Xbox One at launch. I dont own an Xbox or a PC but LOVE Cuphead and am hungry for more content. I do not want to shell out $200 for a single DLC expansion....

Why would they announce it now, when they can announced it in a direct to build hype and interest.

Once they see the sales explode on the switch compared to the xbox well see the sequel. Its not a buddy thing, its a money thing.
