Reggie looks back on the Wii/Wii Sports as a 'gutsy call' for Nintendo

Definitely a move no one predicted

Nintendo always marches to the beat of its own drum, but never was that more true than with the Wii. Nintendo decided to create a piece of hardware that provided roughly the same visuals as the GameCube, but a wildly different experience from controls. It was a move unlike any other in the game industry at the time, which made it quite a leap of faith. During he keynote at Cornell, Reggie Fils-Aime looked back on the bold move.

“This was driven by intellectual curiosity during a slump in the video game market. Nintendo saw a lack of innovation in games and consoles—a lack of fun. The Wii and Wii Sports changed the interaction between players and the game. It was a gutsy call that paid off.”
