Miyamoto comments on his “Person of Cultural Merit” honor and says he's not planning to retire, gets congratulated by Yuji Naka

Miyamoto's work continues on

Earlier today, we noted that Shigeru Miyamoto was honored in Japan with the title of “Person of Cultural Merit,” which is officially recognized by the Japanese government. It's certainly a lofty title to hold, and Miyamoto recognizes that. See what he had to say about the honor below.

“I’m thankful that light is being shined upon the medium of games. This is a job where you cannot do anything by yourself. I’m going to do my best to keep doing new things so I don’t get asked if I’m about to retire. I want people all over the world to smile.”

Fellow game dev Yuji Naka took to Twitter to congratulate Miyamoto on the honor as well.

“Congratulations. This is a first for the games industry, right? I’m really glad that people from the games industry are chosen now.”

Hate to see Miyamoto hate within the gaming community, especially as a large amount of it is based on misinformation that was spread via social media.

The gaming industry would not be what it is today without Miyamoto, he definitely deserves this and I'm anxiously waiting to see what his next project is!

Ugh, too bad. He should definitely retire.

Miyamoto has made mistakes in his lifetime but he has never ceased to make me smile.

Hate for him is unfounded and narrow-minded.

It's so easy to complain but it is hard to create. Miyamoto has it's set of limitations in terms on how it approaches some games, but for the most part everything he's worked on has ingenuity, functionality and fun. It's easy to take things for granted, especially since most people know what they dislike but they don't know entirely what they want.

Well deserved. The man is a legend in the industry and without him the Nintendo would not have saved the gaming crash industry back in the day. So we can thank him a lot for the gaming world as we witness it today.

Shigeru Miyamoto is one of best if not the best developer that with the games and franchises he created or supervise defined the game industry.

Well deserved and he earned it. People hating him for not having stories on Paper Mario whatnot is baffling considering he had no role in that whatsoever.

It all stems from the hate Iwata got for botching the Wii U and now if anyone at Nintendo does anything against fans wishes, fans will wish them to die get fired.

Miyamoto only gets complaints for not letting his Mario franchise evolve beyond the standards he set, nevermind that he took a hands off role for Super Mario Odyssey. Miyamoto only prides himself to make sure games are fun first and foremost before anything else.

I'd be really leery for a Mario game without proper oversight. Otherwise you get stuff like:

Miyamoto deserves all the awards and recognition for what he has done for the industry. Has he made choices for games/franchises that I love that I didnt agree with? Of course (I could make a list)! But what developer hasnt done dumb things or made a few bad products? It still doesnt deny the fact that Miyamoto has done great things not only for Nintendo but the gaming industry as a whole. Who can seriously hate the man that created Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Zelda, Star Fox, and F-Zero?
