I hope Death Stranding doesn't win just because it's a Kojima Game.
Based on sentiment I've gathered, GOTY should probably realistically be between Smash, Sekiro, and Outer Worlds. I picked up Death Stranding recently and while I'm enjoying it, and may vote for it for Art Direction and/or Sound Design, it would be weird to me if it wins GOTY. It's very explicitly a niche appeal kind of game and Kojima's dialogue is..... special.
Kind of annoyed that there isn't even a best puzzle game category, so all Baba Is You can get is best indie game where it's up against a couple pretty popular titles. Oh well. That's my personal GOTY and I'll for sure be voting for it for best indie game.
It's funny that Link's Awakening is nominated for Art Direction. It's one of the few things I didn't like about the game.
I personally would've put Luigis Mansion 3 or Fire Emblem Three Houses as the token Nintendo nominee over Ultimate...A game that technically didnt even launch this year..
By that logic, Smash could never win an award. It was released the night of The Game Awards last year, so it was impossible to be nominated last year. So why on earth shouldn't it be eligible for this year's awards? For as much as I loved Fire Emblem, and liked Luigi's Mansion, neither deserve it as much as Smash Ultimate.
Don't worry Astral Chain and Goose, you both MY GOTY =)
But if AC and Goose don't win best action and indie the awards can suck my entire ass.
And with all this E-sport crap, I see this will be another "awards" show for the news mainly. Hope to see some Bayonetta 3. Now it surely has to be time.
P.S: See? Smash IS a fighting game
I loved Astral Chain as well, but Devil May Cry V deserves it more. Just straight up a better game. Personally, DMCV should have been nominated for game of the year. It would get my vote.
Outer Wilds or Disco Elysium will win best indie. I can only speak for Outer Wilds vs. Goose and OW is better. Honestly, I'm surprised Outer Wilds isn't nominated for GOTY.
Goose is a cute and fun little game but the other noms are way more substantial games. Baba Is You for instance is a massive game (60 hours in personally and I still have a lot to go, lowest I've seen for a 100% file is ~30 hours.) and it's in all honesty in the upper echelon of all-time puzzle games. While I haven't played it yet, Disco Elysium is apparently akin to Planescape Torment (which is ridiculously high praise). Outer Wilds and Katana Zero, while I know a bit less about them, get a lot of good talk too. To be honest I'll be fairly annoyed if Goose wins Best Indie based pretty much entirely on meme cred.
Did they....fix Jump Force? My impression is that it was quite a disappointment.
Anyway, yay Outer Wilds! Coming to Switch by the way. Hope it runs well, kinda framey on XBO. Not to be confused with The Outer Worlds, though that is also coming to Switch and I also hope it runs well.
Regardless of its quality, and maybe it's because it's overrepresented in other categories, but Death Stranding should be in the Games for Impact category. It's literally a game about reuniting a fractured America by working together (indirectly with online people) and helping others just for the sake of being a good Samaritan. That's the kind of thing this category is meant to celebrate. The literal description on their website for this category is: "FOR A THOUGHT-PROVOKING GAME WITH A PRO-SOCIAL MEANING OR MESSAGE" (copied from an all caps text. Not shouting or being obnoxious).
I would actually say the social aspect is one of the few things that are actually great about Death Stranding and is one of maybe two categories I think it should win. Just my opinion.
Fire Emblem and Smash not being nominated for Best Soundtrack when they have licensed music like Death Stranding in there sure is some BS...
