PlatinumGames announces partnership with Tencent which allows them to expand into self-publishing while remaining independent

An interesting development

PlatinumGames has just announced a partnership with Tencent that will allow them to expand their business, all while remaining independent. Check out the official announcement straight from Platinum below.

We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.

We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.

Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.

Thanks to Dondom95 for the heads up!

ugh...
Aint no money like getting in bed with Communist governments

what does tencent get out of it?
I assume publishing in China? weird deal

Revenue from profits of their share in Platinum

basically having confidence in Platinum and hoping their games do well to let them go "hey look at these cool games" to people. They don't really have much control here, and it helps Platinum finally do the self publishing they talk about a lot

Was this the big exciting news they were talking about last year and said got pushed to this year? I am not excited about this at all, but well hopefully it's nice I guess. I worry greatly for both Platinum and about just how much Tencent owns in general...

Well I did NOT see this one coming. Curious to see how this will work out in the future. Still hope there will be a sequel to Astral Chain.

And no, Tencent does not own shares now, it's an independent deal from the looks of it, so keep your panties on, kiddos.

Now where's my Bayonetta 3?

Looks Like Astral chain sold well so a sequel is not out of the question.

Taura“ Astral chains are thankfully sold more than expected. ”

Thank you, kind Noxide! =)

The game deserves it. A sequel with a perhaps a little more budget or time and let it grow on the first one and we could have a winner.

Can you please explain how this means they didn't buy shares of platinum? I take it to mean that they did buy an undisclosed amount of shares with their capital tie-up. Just not a controlling percentage. Similar to their investment in epic games.

Seems to me it's more like a loan and not a purchase. I could be wrong though.

It's most likely a capital investment and Platinum have already said Tecent don't have an equity stake agreement coming from this. Platinum have talked about wanting to self publish for a while now so the most likely deal coming out of this is that Tecent have given them the money to self publish a game and they're either taking a percentage of the revenue made from that game or Platinum will only start to receive revenue from the game once Tencent are paid back.

Tencent has done this with multiple other studios and all of those studio operate completely independent... maybe.

Exactly. The's what it looks like to.me too. Nowhere does it say that they have purchased any shares from PLATINUM.

"Tencent has done this with multiple other studios and all of those studio operate completely independent... maybe"

Got any examples?

Tencent is also the company behind te ditribution of the Switch in China it? If so that could maybe deepen the ties between Nintendo and Platinum (cause if Tencent starts funding their self-publishing, it's in Tencent's interest that this happens on Switch and not on competing hardware).

... that's a stretch, I know.

Presumably this means nothing in the long term. It's probably just a distribution deal for China.

No sir, I do not like it.
