Guinness World Records shares a rundown of Pokemon records for Pokemon Day 2020

Whether it’s Pikachu, Eevee or Charizard - Pokémon are all over the world.

Even though the well-loved world of pocket monsters was created back in 1996, it’s still has one of the most active fan bases out of any other franchise.

Currently there are more than 800 species of collectible Pokémon monsters, and they’ve gone from being on trading cards, to plush toys, and even had floats in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade!

So in celebration of National Pokémon Day, we’re putting together a top selection of pocket monsters that happen to have Guinness World Records titles.

First Pokémon character

If we’re going to truly start at the beginning, we may as well start with the first Pokémon to ever start the franchise. Many assume Pikachu came before all, with his iconic standing in the games. However, its Rhydon that takes the title of first and foremost creature of the game. This rhino-like monster made its initial appearance in the RPG video games in 1996 and has been in the most Pokémon video games ever since, including the handheld smartphone app that’s reignited the Pokémon frenzy. If you’re lucky, you might find him by some rocks or buildings, as his horn-like features give him the ability to smash concrete and shatter diamonds.

Fastest Pokémon

For those who are just picking up the game, the fastest in the Pokémon world is none other than Deoxys, with a base speed stat of 180. This rapid creature was designed by Japanese Pokémon character artist Ken Sugimori, and introduced with Pokémon Emerald in 2004. It's name cleverly provides a clue to its attribute- as it stems from the swift process of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).

Slowest Pokémon

On the other end of the spectrum, the world’s slowest Pokémon are Shuckles, Munchlax and Pyukumuku, each with a speed stat of 5. Despite having the word 'slow' in its name, Slowpoke is a more speedy pocket monster with a speed stat of 15.

Heaviest Pokémon

You’ll feel the ground move with these pocket monsters, who are reported to weigh 999.9 kg (2,204.4 lb) each. Cosmoem is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VII and is the evolved form of Cosmog, one of the lightest Pokémon. Celesteela is a Steel/Flying-type Pokémon also introduced in Generation VII and is one of the two UB-04, the other being Kartana, again another one of the lightest.

Shortest Pokémon

The bug-like Joltik is only 4 inches in height with several eyes, and parasitic tendencies. It doesn’t have the capacity to generate its own electrical force, so it must latch on to stronger Pokémon and then stores energy in its body pouch.

Lightest Pokémon

No, that’s not a dandelion flowing in the wind; it’s actually called a Flabebe. As one of the female Pokémon breeds, this lightweight creature resides in a flower for the remainder of its life where it sources electricity from the plant. Other Pokémon species that share this record include Gastly, Haunter, Flabébé, Cosmog and Kartana, all weighing 100 g (0.2 lb). Of this selection of the lightest Pokémon; two are ghost type, one fairy type, one a gaseous psychic type and Kartana, who is made of paper.

Least Popular Pokémon

Out of the 800 plus existing Pokémon characters, Simisear ranked last according to the Pokémon General Election held in Japan throughout this year’s month of May. Apparently, no one likes red fire monkeys! In response to the poor feedback, the Pokémon Company made an effort to regain his social standing by creating a business card and giving them away at random to visitors at Pokémon Centers. We’ll see if this makes a difference, but for now, he’s down in history as the public’s least favorite creature.

Most Popular Pokémon

Surprisingly, this record does not belong to Pikachu! Although the bubbly yellow creature is the face of the brand, the most popular Pokémon goes to Greninja. Based on the same vote conducted at the Pokémon General Election in Japan in May 2019, the water-based monster beat Mew, Arceus and Sylveon, respectively. This year, the brand has said they will be announcing the newest most popular Pokémon on the 27th in honor of the holiday. Stay tuned to see who breaks Greninja’s record!
