E3 2020 will not have an "online experience" in June,

The following information comes from an interview with an E3 representative over on PC-Gamer:

Given the disruption brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be presenting an online E3 2020 event in June.  Instead, we will be working with exhibitors to promote and showcase individual company announcements, including on www.E3expo.com, in the coming months," the rep said. "We look forward to bringing our industry and community together in 2021 to present a reimagined E3 that will highlight new offerings and thrill our audiences.

By online experience they mean what exactly?

Hosting a scheduled event online rather than physical conferences and booths.

As if E3 wasn't irrelevant enough. Just pack it in already, it's done.

I suppose, but it'll be sad not have announcements planned for a certain time of the year. For me that's what made E3 special. Directs are fine, though they're not always cover all bases. The Xbox and PS versions of a Direct still need to improve since I don't think we've had a great one (the PS Experience did had a couple of good presentations).

I think for indies it'll be necessary to have some sort of event. Since many indie games start as crowdfunding, either to build the entire game, or prove interest to the publishers.

At this point all I want is a really good Nintendo Direct. Some other announcements from other publishers would be fun, but it's less important.

Yeah, it has been a year with a lack of first party announcements. I mean even an update on Bayonetta 3, SMT and Breath of the Wild would be something.

I do wonder if they're holding back as much because of the pandemic or are using it as a way to push stuff further into the latter part of the year or next year. It just seems they could easily capitalize on anything now. But who knows how messed up their plans got.

If anything a discount on older first party games could have been a nice nod of them, considering many other companies are doing that on this climate. (free subscriptions and that)
