I want so much to be able to enjoy this series. I love absolutely everything about it apart from the gameplay. Music and art are exceptional, the worlds are massive and I want to explore every bit of them and the stories have always interested me but I can’t get past that battle system. I’ve tried the first game on both Wii and New 3DS and couldn’t get on with the battles; then when 2 came out I really tried to get into it and enjoyed it for a spell but it just seemed to add new mechanics to an already complicated system so regularly that I just had enough of it. I’m not a huge JRPG fan but the most recent ones I played were No No Kuni and DQXI and both were so well balanced between simplicity and depth that I was never turned off from them. Just watching the gameplay in this review got close to giving me an aneurysm.

I feel the same way about XC series. That said, I bought XC2 on Switch and watched some videos and read a couple online guides that attempted to explain the battle system as a coherent whole, and it did get a lot more fun for me once I started understanding how all the systems play together.

That said, it was a lot of homework. Watching videos of this XC1 remake, I don’t think I’m up to the task to learn a totally different battle system all over again.

That’s exactly it for me; any game that requires a lot of work just to understand how to play it is a pass now. I can’t spend hours of a game not enjoying it in the hopes that it’ll eventually click. Maybe that’s depriving me of games that could end up being some of my favourites but I can’t commit so much time to certain games in the hopes that I’ll enjoy them eventually (made that mistake recently with 20 hours into Witcher 3 when everyone told me it would eventually get its hooks in...it never did).

I wouldn’t wish for it to change since clearly a lot of people love the battle system in these games but an easy mode wouldn’t go amiss I don’t think. Strip it back to just a few mechanics so that people who mainly want the exploration and story can enjoy them and keep the regular mode for those who want that harder gameplay.

Well you're in luck because Definitive Edition has an easy mode!

Oh no way! I’m all in now haha. Thanks!

I have a knack for RPGs and even I had to play, like 25 hours of XC2 to get into the whole battle system. You definitely need to take your time with those games.

That said, there are games I also couldn't get into at all, like Xenoblade Chronicles X or Octopath Traveler.

I thought about picking this up but I’ve had The Witcher 3 sitting on my PC giving me dirty looks for months now.
