GN Version 5.0

During Limited Run Games' showcase yesterday, it was revealed that WayForward is bringing Shantae, Xtreme Sports, and Shantae: Risky's Revenge to Switch. Shantae and Xtreme Sports are getting new GBC carts, as well as physical/digital releases on Switch. Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut is digital-only. You can now check out full details on all those titles below.

It's time for revenge - and this time there's no escape! Independent development studio WayForward is proud to announce that the critically acclaimed video game, Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut, is headed to Nintendo Switch and Xbox One for the first time, bringing with it all the action, dancing, and magical transformations that the 3-million-plus-selling Shantae series is known for. Priced at $9.99, the game is set to be released digitally this fall.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut is an upgraded version of the second game in the Shantae series, once again putting players in control of Shantae, the Half-Genie heroine, who's on a mission to stop her scheming nemesis, the nefarious lady pirate Risky Boots. To do so, Shantae will explore a variety of environments (including deserts, forests, and undersea caverns), transform into creatures with unique abilities, encounter hilarious NPCs, and confront the dastardly Barons of Sequin Land, all accompanied by spectacular multilayered pixel-art graphics and a fantastic soundtrack.

As with previous editions of Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut, the highly requested Switch and Xbox One versions offer numerous enhancements over the classic 2010 release, including improved navigation features, HD character portraits, and an unlockable Magic Mode. Renowned by fans and critics alike, the original DSiWare version of Shantae: Risky's Revenge was awarded IGN’s Best DS Game of the Year and was 2010's highest-rated handheld game on Metacritic.

In addition to Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut is also headed to Windows 10, and is currently available on PlayStation 4 and Steam. A physical Switch version, published by Limited Run Games, will be available for preorder on limitedrungames.com starting in September with additional specifics to be announced at a later time. Independent development studio WayForward is delighted to confirm that two of the company's beloved classic titles will soon be re-released in a partnership with Limited Run Games: Shantae and Xtreme Sports. Initially published on Game Boy Color, both games will return as authentic reproduction cartridges compatible with the vintage handheld hardware, plus both will be brought to Nintendo Switch in digital and physical forms. Preorders will begin in September for the physical version of Shantae, and in October for Xtreme Sports.

"Over the last decade, Shantae has built up a thriving fanbase, which is a dream come true!" says WayForward creative director and Shantae co-creator Matt Bozon. “Unfortunately, this also means that the majority of Shantae fans missed out when it came to owning a copy of her first adventure, which had a very low production run back in 2002. These days buying a copy on the collector’s market could cost upwards of a thousand dollars! Thanks to Limited Run Games, everyone will have a chance to own a copy of the original Shantae, along with Xtreme Sports, our first foray into handheld gaming, which laid the groundwork for Shantae. Both Shantae and Xtreme Sports are lost gems that you won’t want to miss!”

First released in 2002, Shantae is the groundbreaking action-adventure-platformer that introduced players to the eponymous Half-Genie heroine. In her debut title, Shantae hair-whips, dances, and transforms as she seeks out four elemental stones throughout Sequin Land to put a stop to the nefarious lady pirate, Risky Boots. Highly sought by fans and collectors, Shantae is often considered to be among the pinnacle of Game Boy Color releases.

Having recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its June 2000 launch, Xtreme Sports is a one-of-a-kind sports-themed action-RPG. As contenders Guppi or Fin, players must master five events — skateboarding, surfing, in-line skating, skyboarding, and street luge — by partaking in more than 100 breathtaking sports battles to outperform the competition and become the Xtreme Sports Champion. Are Guppi and Fin XTREME enough to win it all!?

Aside from the upcoming reproduction cartridges and Switch releases, both Shantae and Xtreme Sports are currently available in the eShop on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.
