Shigeru Miyamoto says Mario was made a plumber to "make him someone who might live near you, and not a superhero"

A hero everyone can believe in

Shigeru Miyamoto has shared a very straightforward answer on why Mario was given the occupation of plumber back in the early days. He shared the reasoning in an interview with CNN.

"We wanted him to be someone who might live near you, and not a superhero."

While superheroes are bigger than ever nowadays, it seems taking the every-man approach with Mario back in the day was the right path to go down!

Miyamoto also was asked what words he would share with Mario if the mustachioed one were a real person. Miyamoto offered up these thoughts.

"Keep living in a way that's true to yourself is more enjoyable than being in competition with others. You'll be keeping plenty busy, so don't forget to work out and keep your mustache well groomed"

I want to see a Mario game that involves plumbing and is just an like an average workday for Mario. Maybe a puzzler where you spin/rotate pipes to connect them? (Like Bioshocks hacking minigame)

Well I mean he does venture inside pipes all the time, sometimes into sewers or whatever the underground levels are supposed to be.

Makes me think of Superstar Saga where you needed to do near-literal plumbing under a castle to progress. I loved it. That's another reason I love Sunshine so much; it may not be quite plumbing but it feels like a real job with real problems you gotta solve to rescue people. Sometimes it gets pretty messy lol

So basically Mario Bros Except with the lack of pipe rotating? But yeah this is interesting. I can see Mario going back to Brooklyn and Bowser doing something to make the underground worse and Mario would have to do something about it.

Bowser clogged the toilet.

I guess there were no carpenters near Miyamoto's home... Or maybe his musical taste changed and he stopped liking The Carpenters kkk

I seem to remember Mario being a carpenter back in the original Donkey Kong days, but I think they switched him over to a Plumber for the Mario Bros. game, where they were working with pipes.

True. That's my point. He could simply have remained a carpenter
