GN Version 5.0

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is the latest in a long line of innovative and unique products from Nintendo. This one came about through a collaboration with Velan Studios, and the inspiration behind the project comes from an area you might not expect.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Velan Studios president Guha Bala said that an interest in drone racing led them to the concept of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. In drone racing, competitors are flying their machines throughout courses by using VR headsets that show them the view from a camera on the drone. It's easy to see how that setup paved the way for what we get in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

As of right now, the only kits being offered for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit are the Mario and Luigi options. Could we expect more character options down the road, or expansion sets for more obstacles? Here's what Mr. Bala had to say.

"This wasn't done with the plan of saying, 'How many additional accessories can we sell?' That would be a very typical business plan way of doing things. The way that this was done was more like, 'What's an amazing value for the consumer and how much can we give to them right now?' If people accept it and love it, of course it creates more opportunities but we focus on that first part."
