Limited Run Games sells 25k units of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game 'Complete Edition' on Switch in 3 hours

The Scott Pilgrim brand has a ton of fans, and plenty of those people absolutely love Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. Apparently those people also own a Switch, because they showed up big for the game's physical release.

Limited Run Games revealed multiple physical versions of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game 'Complete Edition,' and pre-orders for all of them went live today. According to Limited Run, they managed to sell 25k units of the Switch versions in just 3 hours! That makes for Limited Run Games' biggest release yet! No word on what the split was between versions, but whatever it is, the release can certainly be considered a success!

A publisher goes out of their way to make a physical release of a game where otherwise there wouldn’t be one and you complain they want to turn a small profit?! Really jumping the shark now.

Added to the fact you repeatedly complain about the price of Switch carts.

25,000 isn’t a massive number and that's one of my biggest problems with Limited Run Games, they live up to their name, with very limited supply and often expensive versions, not just expensive, but ludicrously so. Take Scott Pilgrim as an example, there's a $400 bundle.

A) This is going to be available to preorder for six weeks, they'll doubtless sell tens of thousands more copies.

B) If you don't want all the merch, you can just order the game for like $40.

That’s another I didn’t clarify, as you say the base game is, well it's actually $35, but even their postage is expensive. The digital version is $15, so it's quite a markup. Traditional 1st party and 3rd party games have the same digital and physical prices.

In fact, you can very often buy the physical versions cheaper. I appreciate that it's a smaller publisher, it's a smaller production run and all that, but they're clearly making money out of this. I'd like for other parties to come in and release physical versions at more reasonable prices.

They're essentially premium collectors items and there's nothing wrong with the price.

No shit it's $35: switch carts are expensive as hell to make. There will never be a switch game with MSRP of $20 or less from them or really any small scale pub: the lowest they went was 25 dollars on Doom 64 and even that they noted was a bit of a stretch for them to do, but they went with it anyhow due to knowing the game was $5 on digital and wanting to make it a value. The reason digital versions don't equal the physical prices, is because typically these games weren't going to be physical to begin with before LRG/someone else stepped in, so the parity doesn't apply.

Standards are fine priced for what they are (Especially when they include manuals), and the CE stuff are all bonuses meant for superfans: you didn't have to buy the $130 Blaster Master Zero 1/2 double pack super duper CE in June for instance, if you just wanted the games and their DLC for like $40 digitally, but if you did you got OST CDs, replica tanks, and a bunch of other neat shit.

Yes, the larger capacity Switch cartridges are expensive, particularly the 32GB cartridge. Scott Pilgrim would fit on a 1GB cartridge. So that argument is null and void.

I can equally say there will never be a $140 physical Nintendo published Switch game. That's what it converts to when comparing like to like, and they use far bigger cartridges on occasion.

1GB carts are still expensive AF. Axiom Verge was on one and it was $40 MSRP. Don't underestimate the switch carts, even games around 100 megs end up on costly carts. It's just the nature of the weaker medium.

Axiom Verge was $30 for just the game. I bought the Multiverse Edition on Switch myself. I don’t remember having any issue with its price, but I do love that game, having played it on Wii U, and some of the profits went to a good cause. That was 3 years ago, you'd hope and expect the price of the cartridges has fallen since then.

As for "other parties," you do realize that their *entire business model* is making physical versions of games that no one was going to publish physically, right? If you find that $35 is too much to pay for a game that's $15 digitally, just buy the digital version. If I may quote a stupid but iconic woman: maybe if it's just not giving it, maybe it's just not for you.

I get really tired of this circlejerk about how Limited Run Games are the most predatory company in gaming. They're not even in, like, the top 50.

I said I'd like to see some more companies come in and publish these Indies. I acknowledged the issues, but I do believe they're overcharging. There's room for competition.

Like imagine if Nintendo charged $80 for their physical games, actually the differential would be even more, we're talking about a $15 game versus $60 games. If you go like for like, Nintendo would be charging $140 for physical games.

None of the Switch Limited Run games are actually limited as they all have open preorders for a minimum of like 2 weeks.

Yooka Laylee is the only Limited Run game I have tried buying. I tried to order it the first day orders went live, and it was already sold out.

I love scott pilgrim. I love the books and the movie and I used to love the game.... But it hasn't aged very well. River city Girls is the same type of game but better in every way. It's hard to go back.
