The last few financial reports from Nintendo have one or two stats that really put the Switch's success into perspective. The Q3 2021 results that Nintendo just released have given us another such stat.

According to the report, the Switch has now sold 79.87 million units worldwide. It's managed to do that before it reached its 4 year anniversary. As a matter of fact, it did that with data only going up to Dec. 31st, 2020. That was still enough to push the Switch far past the install base of the 3DS, which sits at 75.94. The 3DS did a fine job in the sales department, but it's easy to see the Switch is the more successful of the two.

The next milestone for the Switch to achieve will be outselling the GBA, and that's pretty much a done deal at this point. The GBA sold 81.51 units in its lifetime. Truth be told, there's a good chance the Switch has already blown past that figure with January sales factored in, but since Nintendo hasn't shared that number yet, we can't call it 100% confirmed.
