A Message From Kevin Cassidy

Hello everyone.

This is t27duck. I know many of you probably have gone through several emotional roller coasters over the last few days.

I have been in contact directly with NickyHill over the....uhh... status of things and have received direct instructions from Kevin.

Firstly, the following is a direct copy/paste from Kevin Cassidy himself...

Hey guys, I'm sorry I've been MIA for the last few days. This was completely unplanned, and I had no way to contact anyone when it happened.

I want you all to know that I'm healthy and safe. That goes for Mom Brain and the whole GN crew too. Actually, it goes for anyone tied to GN. We are 100% fine, I promise.

Obviously something is keeping me away from work for the time being, but I can't get into details yet. I know that's extremely frustrating, and I am right there with you. As soon as everything is worked out, I'll be back to share details with you.

Again, I promise everyone is in good health. This is not related to the pandemic or anything like that. Mom Brain and I are sitting on the couch doing crossword puzzles and being our stupid selves as I type this.

When everything is settled, I'll fill you all in. Unfortunately, it's going to take patience, and that goes for our end too.

Ok, so again the above is straight from Kevin.

Additionally despite the very appreciative rise of support from his staff and fans... I have also recieved other instructions.

Disregard the post about Nintendojam and Yoshiller "handling the site" until his return. No, they are not in any trouble. I have been instructed that this post is the post on the site until I hear otherwise. I am not revoking anyone's access to various parts of the site for the time being unless told otherwise, but I do ask the existing alt story writers to "take a break" until given the high sign else I will invoke stronger measures.

Beyond that, the rest of this site will run as "normal" with comments and PMs working as they should.

I'm just telling myself this is some weird social experiment until I hear otherwise. Like RMC just wanted to see how we would all react if the site suddenly stopped updating. Been checking in on nintendoeverything and nintendolife but it's just not the same.

Yes, RMC with his kindness and expertise, is irreplaceable.

Still nothing ? Man I have no idea what that could be but really it has to involve the whole site. I mean it's not just RMC having an issue or other preoccupations in his personal life. In that case why would no one be allowed to update/post new stories ?
This is just very weird.

March 2020 - Pandemic hits.
March 2021 - GoNintendo out of commission.

No news can be posted here in the mean time? Anyone have recommendations for another site to use to keep up with news?

NintendoLife and Destructoid are the most reliable for timely news, afaik. MyNintendoNews, NintendoEverything seem to be late to the party a lot of times. Either way, the first two sites can't exactly replace GN as all three post different kinds of news (though there's always some cross-posting).

I honestly would not be surprised at this point if its related to the Pokemon Unite Beta leaks. I didnt watch any of the videos that were shared, but as someone who was part of the beta, I couldnt even take a screenshot without it coming out plastered with a large "WARNING. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT SHARE." message with my username to track it back to me. While its obvious that RMC did not produce those videos, sharing them was probably enough to get put in hot water based on the TOS that users agreed to when joining the beta. Hopefully things get ironed out and we can get back to normal.

(Also I absolutely do not understand why Tencent/TPC had the no sharing rule for the beta. )

There are lots of beta projects that ask users not to share impressions, screenshots, vids or general information. Seems kinda ridiculous to gag order a whole website that isn't directly tied to the beta though.

I completely agree with you! I have never been part of a "closed" beta before so I guess this actually should not be surprised that others do it as well.

Nintendo is the same company that completely canceled the live action Zelda series on netflix due to a leak about it even existing. I wouldn't put it past TPC to do the same. Tencent is also awful with how they try to punish people as well

Netflix did that to put pressure on Nintendo into making a deal. It's a pretty sleazy tactic by Netflix and Nintendo was right to not give into.

Cutting ties with the leaker or sites that shared images that leaked elsewhere makes sense. But a complete blanket gag order over the whole website is ludicrous.

Nintendo cancelled their Netflix Zelda plans. They didn't prevent Netflix from releasing new content.

Still just speculating that this is all some sort of legal issue. I do not have any inside information.

We're talking about the same Tencent that sued users in China just for talking "badly" about their apps. They set out to ruin people's lives by bleeding them dry.

Netflix isn't on the Switch, and I think it's probably because of that entire situation. Nintendo takes leaks seriously. They either trust you, or they don't, it seems. There's no middle-ground it seems (except with Ubisoft and the Rabbids leak thing?).

We can look at High Voltage Software and the leak that apparently happened there causing them to lose the contract for making what is now Splatoon? Maybe?
Then there was the ExciteBots and Excite Truck developer, as well as a few other titles, Monster games that worked closely with Nintendo for years. Apparently a leak happened about something they were working on, or that Nintendo was doing, and their relationship went completely down the garbage disposal as well?

One person at a company leaks something, and yes, Nintendo will punish the entire company if the company can't find out who leaked it, and fire them apparently. They take leaks extremely seriously.

Nintendo ending a relationship with a company =/= Nintendo preventing that company from ever developing another game ever again.

Maybe for Nintendo, meaning they won't allow the developer to ever to work with Nintendo on their systems again. Monster Games, the developer of Excite Truck, ExciteBots, etc., is still around and has published several racing titles since the reported fallout, but they haven't published one on a Nintendo system since.
High Voltage? Not sure.

A site with Nintendo's name in it? Not sure how that would go if they had an issue with something. Different territory entirely, as their name is in/on it?

Yea, since they didnt participate, they could not have signed the NDA, so I feel like there shouldnt be a case there, but the world is big so maybe some country has some strange law that would limit something like that, even if it does sound kinda redicilous.

Time to panic..
And in doing so, let's all speculate wildly about things we have absolutely no information on! It's a panic party, Panic on the dance floor, panic in my pants.

GoNintendo? More like “Gone-Nintendo”!

Has anyone made that one yet?

Somebody in the 180+ comments did say "Gone-tendo" already, yes. Sorry to put a damper on your parade. 🌧

There was also at one point a "Gone Sony" (might even still be up? and also a "Going Microsoft").

Hey, I wonder whats going on, this seems to be a strange intermission to me. Not a problem to give things a break, even for a longer time. So out of the blue this last post seems a bit puzzling to me though. I hope things are alright.

Imagine this:
Nintendo announces a Nintendo Direct and when it airs, the first thing we hear is “Hi! I’m Rawmeatcowboy and this... is the Nintendo Direct”

And it turns out that RMC has become the new Reggie when it comes to PR

While it is a bit worrying to see my favorite news site on hiatus along with RMC, my favorite news guy, some of the speculation present is a bit silly.

I don't think it's a civil matter (like if Nintendo/The Pokemon Company/Tencent had an issue with GoNintendo's reporting of Pokemon Unite). In normal circumstances if some companies had issues with RMC's reporting or the reporting from his hires, they'd phone or email Rawmeat with a cease-and-desist and the posts that triggered the C&Ds get removed. At worst, GoNintendo would be suspended from review copies and game company events for any repeat issues.

My guess is for the current hiatus is that it's business related and sometimes businesses get embargod on certain matters or operations until the matters clear or get certified.

True. I don’t think anyone can be blamed for trying to add things up though, this is a favourite site and community for many of us and the suddenness of all of this silence is jarring so it’s no surprise people are trying to make sense of things with what we know. The Tencent speculation is a reach I’ll give you that but the proximity between that post and the site going dark is very close so it’s natural to make the connection.

I keep finding myself clicking onto this site out of habit, and then I see it hasn't updated and get sad.

Lol it's the same for me. I don't get sad though, I just go "Oh, yeah!... It'll really be something when RMC comes back."

I visit this site so much that just pressing "g" in the search bar suggests GoNinteno before anything else. I almost can't visit this site multiple times a day, so it's really depressing that it hasn't updated in 2 weeks.

Hopefully the site will come back soon. In the meantime, any other options to see the latest news? please no nintendo life, that site has gone full woke.

I saw Nintendo Everything recommended earlier in this post, so that has been my Nintendo site of choice during this downtime.

It's not the same thing, but it's still better than nothing!

Well someone has started a digital milk carton for our favorite uncooked cattle driver. Hope he’s okay.

I logged in for the first time in, like, 11 years just to say that, if Rawmeat is reading these comments, that we all love and support him and the site no matter what.

Hoping everything is ok: it's no use speculating about something awful, and hopefully this all blows over soon Smile

Rawmeat- coming out of the woodwork to say I hope all is well man....don’t need ya slacking on the job now alright? :P

Cheers man, hope whatever this speed bump is you and MB are able to get over it soon. Been a fan for nearly a decade, y’all are fam.

200th comment ! 🥳 does RMC have a Twitter or anything?

I knew the 200th would mention it! lol https://twitter.com/gonintendotweet is the official site twitter of course. The only personal one I could find just has the handle of rawmeatcowboy and has not posted since June of 2009.

Hope things will return to normal soon and that everyone is ok. Been my homepage since 2005 when the site launched! <3

Hope you're keeping well, RMC and crew. Ten days of radio silence is a bit much, but I'm still checking twice daily just to make sure I don't miss a recap of what went down.

Hopefully good news is all it ends up being either way!

Nice to see everyone logging in and commenting just to show their support!

Reading Nintendo news on any other website is just NOT THE SAME!

I couldn't agree more - although I do appreciate what other websites have to offer, this one is definitely the premier Nintendo news experience. Stuff is easy to find, easy to see, big stories usually get the little picture at the top, and the little taglines underneath the headlines are always giggle-worthy!

I'll jump on the support train.
RMC I hope that everything that is going on will sort itself out as soon as possible. I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for you, but we'll all be here for you when everything get back to normal.
Miss you guys and love you lots!

"GoNintendo | What are YOU waiting for?"

We're waiting for you, and we'll still be waiting, no matter how long it takes. Smile

Will there at least be an update on how long this is going to take?

Do we ... move on? Do we wait?

What's the record for most comments on a GoNintendo story?

RMC, if you can read this, I'm sending you a coded message of hope and good vibes: beep beep

Ok...I'm gonna be perfectly honest. I'm glad I didn't touch Nintendo life for the past five years and went straight here at GoNintendo.

Seriously, Nintendolife is starting to be awful. Their talking points sections are terrible, the news they give out are just one or three minimum and really..the only good thing is Alex and their exclusive interviews.

GoNintendo not only has RMC and his legendary beard but rather than having their own staff put stuff here, its the community that does the job most of the time and that is far more worthy because its a hell of a lot more relevant than the lousy stuff that Nintendolife talks about.

Some of those talking point articles on NL really are crap. There was one the other day defending the decision to remove 3D All Stars and Mario 35 from the eShop ultimately saying “this frees them up to do something new for other anniversaries and isn’t that exciting?” Just nonsense.

That said, their videos are excellent I think. Alex, Jon and Zeon are are all great IMO and they’re just fun to listen to. The site on the other hand isn’t as great. Also what is with the comment section? Why don’t the replies connect to the comment they’re replying to? I don’t want to rag on other sites but compared to GN there’s a world of difference haha

NL has always been my No. 2 site.
You are right on about the videos. They are fantastic.
As for the comment sections -- a lot of those leaving comments seem to have a strong dislike for Nintendo, which is weird given that it is a Nintendo site.
Finally, I read that piece about the anniversary items going away to mean that this could allow Nintendo to do other things for other franchises by freeing up resources for some other special events/activities/offerings. It was in contrast to most of the coverage on the site about the March 31 deadline event which has been quite negative.

Thu Mar 18 21 02:16pm
(Updated 2 times)

Ah, with the comments I just meant the system itself. It’s frustrating seeing a reply to a comment and then having to manually search for the comment they replied to since the reply doesn’t just bolt on to the original post- never understood it!

I know what the writer of that article was getting at but they really just tried too hard to spin a positive out of a wholly negative situation. 3D All Stars being a limited physical release would be absolutely fine but to then remove it from the eShop too is asinine and has literally no benefit to anyone but Nintendo as it forces people to buy that game within a set time frame and completely preys on FOMO. Mario 35 also preys on the same fear (“if you want to play this you’ll have to subscribe/buy a Switch as soon as possible!”). Her suggestion that server costs for 35 may be a factor doesn’t fly for reasons that are so obvious they’re not worth mentioning and the idea that 35 and 3D All Stars will be replaced with similar celebratory games (likely Zelda stuff) also just doesn’t make sense from a consumer standpoint. Just because the 35th anniversary for Mario is no longer relevant doesn’t mean they need to erase all mention of it when the next anniversary comes along.

For Nintendo, sure- they get attention squarely focused on whatever anniversary they’re promoting whether Nintendo fans like it or not and again, taking advantage of FOMO is a lucrative move. For us though it’s a case of scrambling to buy and play things before they’re arbitrarily removed or only purchasable via inflated second hand prices- the latter of which should not be an issue whatsoever for games released in this era. In a world where digital storefronts are common place I cannot get behind the concept of “timed/limited print” with digital content at all. The only thing defendable is the business logic and that’s not for our favour so I don’t want to see it being defended as if these decisions are for the benefit of us. Nintendo don’t owe us anything of course but anti-consumer is anti-consumer and should be criticised, not defended- even in the begrudging way that article was framed in.

Pretty much. I have seen many users get banned simply for comments that the NL staff don't like.
There was a guy who got banned just for saying "woke" in one of his articles.
And the users there are really toxic. It seems like I'm on twitter.

I am starting to lose hope that we will hear anything the next few days. Could be a longer hiatus.
Man, I miss it already.
