A Message From Kevin Cassidy

Hello everyone.

This is t27duck. I know many of you probably have gone through several emotional roller coasters over the last few days.

I have been in contact directly with NickyHill over the....uhh... status of things and have received direct instructions from Kevin.

Firstly, the following is a direct copy/paste from Kevin Cassidy himself...

Hey guys, I'm sorry I've been MIA for the last few days. This was completely unplanned, and I had no way to contact anyone when it happened.

I want you all to know that I'm healthy and safe. That goes for Mom Brain and the whole GN crew too. Actually, it goes for anyone tied to GN. We are 100% fine, I promise.

Obviously something is keeping me away from work for the time being, but I can't get into details yet. I know that's extremely frustrating, and I am right there with you. As soon as everything is worked out, I'll be back to share details with you.

Again, I promise everyone is in good health. This is not related to the pandemic or anything like that. Mom Brain and I are sitting on the couch doing crossword puzzles and being our stupid selves as I type this.

When everything is settled, I'll fill you all in. Unfortunately, it's going to take patience, and that goes for our end too.

Ok, so again the above is straight from Kevin.

Additionally despite the very appreciative rise of support from his staff and fans... I have also recieved other instructions.

Disregard the post about Nintendojam and Yoshiller "handling the site" until his return. No, they are not in any trouble. I have been instructed that this post is the post on the site until I hear otherwise. I am not revoking anyone's access to various parts of the site for the time being unless told otherwise, but I do ask the existing alt story writers to "take a break" until given the high sign else I will invoke stronger measures.

Beyond that, the rest of this site will run as "normal" with comments and PMs working as they should.

Kinda random, but does anyone remember Kevin's hotel room tours back when he would go to E3? Every once in awhile I remember them and smile. Very Happy They were amusing little videos. I miss RMC.

"And this is where the magic happens".

I remember that! It was really fun to watch for me when I was younger since I didn't get to travel much, and E3 was such an exciting place I wanted to go to.

I miss RMC too. Still here, patiently waiting.

I do, because I was often there 😎👍

Continually checking my GoNintendo RSS feed for a new RMC post, my god when that day comes it will be like being let out of a long lockdown!

Love to the crew, can you tell by the amount of posts in this thread that we're thinking of you 😂😂😂

So, how about an update?

I'll post news updates here in these comments to help fill the void:

New Mario Party for Nintendo Switch™ officially added online play to the main board game mode yesterday after decades of fan requests. In true Nintendo fashion, they released the update at 3 a.m. with little fanfare as if they don't want anyone to know about it. This changes the game's official North American release date to 4/27/21 now that it's worth buying.

Kinda late...but I guess they did say that they plan to add more content for their "evergreen" titles so...

Hopefully SMO DLC anyone?!? Come on, you know you just want the Super Mario back right?

It's been said already, but they probably just work on SMO2 at this point. I'd be in favor of a SMO2 to be honest. As much as I loved Bowser's Fury, its 20 hours of gameplay max made me really wish for a brand new complete game. Of course, their development teams are limited and they can't work on everything at once so I'll be happy with DLC too.

Now if only they'd surprise us with updates that patch in online co-op to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, they'd finally be worth buying to those of us that already own them on Wii U.

I'll admit I love both these games but did not repurchase them in their switch version. There just wasn't enough incentive to do so. So in a way, dlc would be appreciated.

All I really wanted from Tropical Freeze was the ability to tweak difficulty more. And by that I don't mean add baby mode with Funky, but rather allow players to play with whatever Kong they want WITHOUT having to play in super hardcore mode. Or just maybe, I get it if they want the main mode to be played the way they wanted it to be played with DK as main and the others as power ups, but just allow us to tweak hardcore mode a bit more. Like for example, we could keep checkpoints or health points. I loved hardcore mode because it felt a lot more like OG DKC, not having to care about puzzle pieces anymore, just the KONG letters, and being able to play as any Kong. It was a faster more arcadey experience, and it felt a lot more like the older games. But GOD was it hard and frustrating that we had to stomach the difficulty to enjoy that version of the game.

I hope RMC is able to enjoy New Pokemon Snap this weekend.

Now I'm not a pokemon guy at all but the new game seems pretty good to say the least.
I'm sure RMC loves the quirkiness of it and the general atmosphere. It seems like something he would enjoy.

So... anyone is playing that Monster Hunter Rise 2.0 update ? How is it?

It looks really neat but i'm sooo late that I still need to play a good amount of time before I get to it. Hunter Rank 3 or 4 here I can't remember. I'm done with Magnamalo in both village and online but that's pretty much it for now.

I like the update a lot since it adds some things that are tougher like apex fights and the new triple high rank offline monster fight. My only problem with Rise was how short and easy the barebone release was. Glad they're adding tougher things.

played it a bit yesterday(and im new to monster hunter), post rank 7 you get multiple levels from just a single hunt. Played some hunts with a experienced player which made it alot easier to understand what to avoid and stuff like that. The content is like just more possibility to progress and unlocking missions, new monsters and gear, so more monster hunter which is a good thing for the game. Prob still lack a ending so atleast 1 more month, so there is time to catch up to earlier and current content in time towards working to that.

Which is exactly the plan.
I have loads of work these days. I need a monster hunter holiday.
Difficulty seems to be better now that the update is out, which is good since the Rise and World definitely are sgnificantly easier than say 3 or 4. Rise seems a bit better than World in that regard but still pretty easy.

I was just listening to an episode of Retronauts and heard RMC's podcast ad.. it's so strange how different the feeling is now. Before, I'd get so excited. It was like seeing a friend on TV.. now, it just makes my heart hurt a bit.

I should state, it was an episode from a few weeks ago

I'll admit, guys, that I was already fucking behind GN's back before Kevin disappeared. Wanikani.com had become my top site. I feel no shame though. I have no shame! Smile

I just got Nier:Replicant White SNow edition today... and a day off tomorrow. What to do...?

Kevin! Come back before E3, dammi! We have things to talk about here!

Okay, this is getting to be absurd. If legal issues are preventing the site from being updated, he could allude to that being the case without specifying what they are. There is no such thing as a gag order that prevents one from using any form of online communication, and if there is, it surely would have applied to the message he passed along in this post.

I see no charitable way to look at this. No matter who you are, barring circumstances where you literally cannot talk to anyone about anything--and that's obviously not the case here--this sort of thing simply isn't done. Especially when you have such a loyal community that's been following you for years.

(inb4 replies about giving him the benefit of the doubt and respecting his privacy--you guys can keep doing that, but I just see this total radio silence, this refusal to even HINT at what the problem is, as grossly disrespectful to the GoNintendo community. And yeah, he doesn't owe anyone anything--and neither do I owe him any more patience when just a mere hint at what's going on, passed through another person via another platform, even, would be enough to satisfy people who miss GN and have been checking back here for well over a month.)

if you are in custody respectively under investigation for whatever reason, you are indeed not allowed to communicate other than via (landline) phone.

I've shifted from a very positive view to the same as you this past week. If it has been this long without any word, I'm starting to believe Kevin either is accused of something very serious and cannot have contact with the outside world or he is just being neglectful of things. If it isn't one of those two things you can keep a sense of privacy and still communicate something to the patrons and community members. I'd absolutely love to be wrong, but I 'm not going to renew my Patreon in the next hour and 50 minutes.

If my suspicions are wrong and there is a good explanation, I'll gladly come back. Props to the faithful who can hold out longer than me.

Completely agree. Since this all started it always struck me weird how he refused to even hint at what was causing this. It leads me to believe it's something he doesn't want anyone finding out about and that in itself will just let peoples imaginations run wild which I'm sure he was aware of. Knowing how rmc is and how hard he worked on this site not missing a podcast ever since 2005 and updating the site literally everyday for 16 years to then radio silent for 2+ months and counting makes me feel like it's something bad. The only circumstance where you couldn't say anything for this long is if you're in custody for something bad or you had a massive mental breakdown and need to recover.

Also according to rmc he's sitting right there just hanging out with mombrain. Yet somehow he couldn't write this message and update us himself and had to use multiple lines of people. He has tons of devices he could write and update us on for over 2 months now but decides not to. Because he "can't say"? So much of this is odd

This is almost my sentiment as well. The only thing I disagree with is saying he doesn't owe anyone anything. There are still people paying him, and pages before this still rallying to support him and the site, and they absolutely deserve an explanation. Its crazy to me that those are the same people with unlimited goodwill and patience in the situation, with only very few with a dissenting opinion.

No doubt something major has happened in his life, and I truly hope and wish everything is well. But to build a community and take money from them just to up and leave them with nothing is pretty abhorrent and embarrassing. Even with legal issues, or like the other reply to you referencing police custody, you can still get word out to your staff to give us something of substance instead of leaving them in the dark as well, then only scrambling some BS post through another person when said staff continues business as usual. What really rubs me the wrong way is this post saying they "are not in any trouble" since they were given absolutely nothing.

I dont enjoy almost any other Nintendo focused site for multiple reasons, and I was more than happy to come here, but I dont know if ill stick around anymore.

I am not sure if any of you have ever been in a lawsuit. Generally speaking one of the top rules is to never post anything online about it , talk about, or even allude to it. Re: site updates depending on the suit, the opposing side may have asked for an injuction to shut the site (and other GN outlets )down (sorta forces the defense to act quickly while bleeding money, or in cases with a ton of money settle) which would explain why the staff cannot update the site and why RMC is not communicating (sure he may be allowed to speak, that doesn't mean he should like at all, it could very easily be used against him).

Police custody makes the least sense. If that was the case day to day operations of GN could continue (and should, so you have an income), unless the site was accused of criminal activity, which would probably get the server shut down.

Of course no one has to stick around, just giving a bit of tidbit of how civil legal issues can affect communication immensely. Basically until we know what's happening don't take it personally

*this is all based on my experience of being involved in 3 civil lawsuits and one corporate disposition years ago. I am not an attorney*

Maybe he has been born again in a religious group and he was instructed by his local shepherd to ignore this site.

MAYDAY1 MAYDAY1 RMC is missing! Also answers to the name Kevin Cassidy. If you happen to see him, please return him to this site. Thank you! The reward is a 🍪.

I get the frustration some people are feeling about lack of updates. But do you honestly think Kevin doesn’t want to update us on what happened and get back to the site as soon as possible? Thats not the RMC I know - the site, and this community, is his life. It’s got to be killing him to have to pause.

"But do you honestly think Kevin doesn’t want to update us on what happened"

Yes, because if he wanted to badly enough, he'd at least update us on the type of thing we're talking about.

"Sorry I can't post to the site, but it's a legal matter I need to resolve".

or

"I'm facing criminal charges and cannot attend to the website"

or

"I've experienced a personal tragedy and need time".

So yeah, I do think he doesn't want to update us.

Count me among those who've had a GoNintendo dream!

Last night dreamed that I checked the site and everything was normal. Excited, I got to looking through all the new posts for any update as to what had been going on... but nobody knew anything, like it had never happened. As if I was the only one for which the site had paused.

And right now I wish that truly was the case.

Much love to Kevin and the GN crew. Miss you, buddy.

I cant imagine a site just stopping entirely like this for almost 2 months because of mysterious causes preventing one guy from working on it

This is why I believe the website itself is under legal action. There may be some kind of injunction upon operating the site until the case has been sorted.

At this rate I can't fault anyone stopping their patreon donations. There's no excuse for being silent for 2 months without even giving anyone a slight hint. Sorry but if they're struggling as badly as I think they are then that's their fault at this point as much as it pains me to say. I've been checking every other day for 2 months but I'm getting close to giving up soon

Yeah no now I'm mad, and I've been a diehard fan with a home page. To not so much as update or indicate what happened, has made me think he either died or something horrifically bad happened.I've never heard of another game blogger/reviewer having to go MIA for a similar length due to a lawsuit, at least not without some way to get proof of life, so it's very concerning.

I've literally gone to the point I shift away from the home page before it even loads, since I now fear it's just dead forever. Sad I don't know what the fuck is happening but it worries me sick and the lack of my fellow journalist/reviewer peers doing NOTHING to search him out (no opinion articles, concerned tweets like before this message, since said tweets instigated the message to begin with, or contacting mombrain/another IRL friend to at least know if he's still alive). The admins and mod team here cannot get ahold of him, so that should be mega concerning: what if his writing pals can't? What if he doesn't even show up in Nintendo Force next time, since I know he writes for that? If he can't even get that work done, then that's a pretty huge red flag since not only is the podcast hyper important to him, but helping out others in general...

Anyone else get irrationally upset when Nintendo makes any kind of announcement now because GoNintendo can’t cover it? I really hope RMC is back before E3.

I hate to say it, but I'm to the point I don't believe the message "from Kevin", something is seriously wrong... I've been thinking since all this happened, and if it's a legal problem my very guess is it's tax related..... But I'm not sure I think it is a legal issue at all, I truly think its a health related problem that they don't want to draw attention to. Why Kevin decided to go completely radio silent blows my mind but I do know this site has been the most important thing in his life for more than 15 years so whatever it is had to be earth shattering....I just wish we could get an "I'm alive and am coming back eventually" update

yeah
I said in the beginning of this thread that they might got raided by the IRS (I'm not talking about a tax audit).
Now that might sound ridiculous but it's really not and can happen even to smaller businesses. Possible tax fraud is a serious crime and leads to the confiscation of pretty much all computers, phones and tablets.

Still here to show support. However, the massive time frame without any update is concerning....
