Koei Tecmo says their collaborations with Nintendo have been important, and "increased their reputation"

Collab clout

In recent years, Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have teamed up to work on spin-offs for some of Nintendo's biggest brands. The two companies worked together on Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors, which both turned out to be successful endeavors. In an interview with Gamesindustry, Koei Tecmo CEO Hisashi Koinuma explains just how valuable those collaborations were.

Perhaps the most remarkable of the subsequent collaborations were those with Nintendo, which entrusted Koei Tecmo first with the Zelda IP for Hyrule Warriors, and then with the Fire Emblem IP for Fire Emblem Warriors. "Being trusted with these big brands has been important," says Koinuma. "I think we now have a special reputation for working well with other companies... These collaborations have increased our reputation and image, and have given us a chance to establish ourselves as a company that can be trusted with big franchises."

Hyrule Warriors/Legends producer discusses how Ravio, Yuga were brought into the game

A portion of a Nintendo Dream interview with producer Yosuke Hayashi, translated by NE...

Q: Please tell me how you wanted to present the playable Ravio.

A: Ravio has the image of being shrouded in mystery. Since he is an item salesman, we aimed to express the idea that he can do anything while also paying attention to his comical side. We were able to put special care into the action of swinging a hammer while also being swayed yourself and using various items, so I hope you’ll have fun with it.

Q: How did you think to utilize Yuga’s abilities, like turning into a wall painting?

A: Yuga’s picture-related abilities certainly left an impression in the original game. We noticed that frames were intermediary whether it was turning people into pictures or transforming into a picture himself. When we thought about how to utilize that in Warriors action, there is of course Yuga entering inside picture frames for movement and attacks, like summoning lightning bolts, flames and even tridents from frames. Furthermore, he is armed with exclusive additional attacks, so we were able to realize really Yuga-like Warriors combat!

Hyrule Warriors Legends devs on why Marin uses a bell, how her moves were decided

A portion of a Nintendo Dream interview with producer Yosuke Hayashi

Q: Please tell me the reason as to why Marin uses a bell as a weapon.

A: We examined her appeal when reviving a pixel art Marin in a 3D world, and as a result, we decided on a concept that her innocent aura and love for singing are important. From there the discussion linked to an instrument of siren and it turned into Sea Lily’s Bell motif as that was the most charming way to express her concept.

Q: What kind of movements did you consider when making Marin a playable character?

A: Dance-like attacking and blowing enemies away by making the wind fish appear, among others. We came to decide on action that is energetic like Marin and feels exhilarating like Warriors games. The elemental attribute was decided to be water because of the image of Koholint Island. The magic spheres that come out of the bell match the form of the instrument and water, so it turned into attacking with sound bursts.
