House House said they originally wanted to include two-player in Untitled Goose Game back in 2016

One to honk and one to bonk

Untitled Goose Game's free two-player update is coming to the Switch today. The update will let you grab a local friend for some co-op shenanigans. Turns out this is something House House wanted to include in the game back when development started.

In a new blog shared by the House House team, we get to learn how two-player was implemented, along with the first idea of co-op play. Check out a snippet from the blog below, then click over for the full piece.

Two-player is something that interested us when we first started working on the game in 2016. But as a very small team, we decided early on to leave the idea behind in order to focus on making the single player game as good as it could be. After the game’s release last year, we had an opportunity to do some more work on the game. One of our favourite things about the response to the game was how many people were playing together with their friends, watching or taking turns. So we decided that the most exciting thing for us would be to add that second goose into the game.

Untitled Goose Game's second goose gets a new honk

A honking good time

We're just one week away from Untitled Goose Game's co-op update, which adds in another goose for a friend to take control of. Leading up to that release, developer House House has shared the video above, which reveals that the second goose has a different honk from the first. I'm sure this is going to lead to all sorts of intense debate on social media over which goose has the better honk.

The answer is goose #2, by the way...

House House on Untitled Goose Game's popularity, multiplayer update, the game's name, and more

Honk if you're interested

Nintendo and House House teamed up for a Twitter Q&A about Untitled Goose Game, and we've rounded up some of the more interesting answers below. Topics like multiplayer, as well as the game's success and name are discussed.

How the team feels about the popularity of the game...

“It's a bit overwhelming to think about! We feel incredibly grateful that our work has made such a positive impression on so many people. We're still a little weirded out that people have gotten goose tattoos though.”

The physical version needing an update for multiplayer...

“We had to lock in the physical release build long before two-player was stable enough. As long as you can connect to the internet on your Nintendo Switch the game will update itself.”

Why they're adding two player...

“Two-player always sounded fun to us, but we decided to focus all our work on single player for our original launch. Knowing how much people enjoyed the single player definitely kept us excited about continuing work on two-player!”

On the game's unique name...

“We initially announced the game as untitled because we wanted to make it very clear that "Untitled Goose Game" WASN'T going to be the real title! But we quickly came to love it, and would never want to give it a 'proper' title.”

In this free update for all platforms, players will be able to enjoy the entire game as two horrible geese, with a new horrible honk, teaming up to plan some horrible pranks, and generally being horrible to everyone together.
