Bloober Team teasing Observer 2, platforms not mentioned

I've...seen things...you wouldn't believe

The original Observer came to Switch a couple years after the game's initial release, and found a whole new group of fans when it did so. Today it looks like those fans have something else to look forward to, as Bloober Team has put out a teaser that is definitely tied to Observer. We don't know platforms or specifics just yet, but there's no doubt players will be heading back into the Blade Runner-inspired world once again.

Actor Rutger Hauer passes away at the age of 75

A moment lost in time, like tears in rain...

We're sad to report that Rutger Hauer, actor who appeared in iconic films like Blade Runner, has passed away at the age of 75. Hauer had fallen ill, and unfortunately lost his battle on July 19th, 2019. Switch owners will recognize Hauer as playing Daniel Lazarski in Observer, developed by Bloober Team. Bloober Team shared a special message to honor Hauer after his passing, which you can find below.

Bloober Team on making horror games about more than just fear

Making a really good horror game is tough. If done right, it can be an experience that sticks with you for months, if not years to come. How do you go about crafting an experience like that? Bloober Team's Rafal Basaj, who worked on Layers of Fear: Legacy and Observer, explains the importance of aiming for more than just fear.

When people think about horror, the first thing that pops up into their heads is probably fear, but the genre is so much bigger then that. You have tension, uneasiness, terror, supernatural elements, gore, etc. – these all line up as potential tools for a designer’s box. Not all of them need to make the player feel an immediate surge of fear when presented – some of them build the lore and the environment, like the addition of apparitions or setting the game at a cemetery. Others are meant to make you feel unsafe without any particular threat in sight, those include ambiance, mood, or in the case of our games, an unpredictable environment that may change at any time.

The more the elements like the ones above mentioned that are present in a game, the more likely it will be perceived as a full-blown horror. But other games can also have elements of the genre. Think about titles like Dead Space, or The Last of Us: are they horror games, or (action) adventure games with horror elements? For a lot of people this is purely subjective. Horror has a bigger hold of pop-culture than we immediately give it credit for, including its place in games.

Bloober Team looking for a publisher to bring Observer to Switch in Japan

Bloober Team revealed Observer for Switch a few weeks back. The title is slated to release in NA/EU, but it seems like the Japanese release might be up in the air. Bloober Team is currently trying to secure a publisher for the game in that region, but obviously there's going to be some extra work needed for that localization. Hopefully they can hunt down a company willing to help out with the work.

History
The first concept for the setting of >observer_ was introduced shortly before we launched the full version of Layers of Fear, somewhere at the end of 2015. The vision of a Cyberpunk horror game resonated well with the whole team immidiately. We wanted to give a unique flavour to our world, which is why we brought the game to Eastern-Europe, complete with the architecture, pop-culture, historical and political references from this part of the world. As a Polish developer we wanted to show some familiarity to Slavic people, but also wanted to keep the universe fresh, almost oriental to Western Europe and Americas.

The first presentation of the game was an exclusive appearence during 2016's PC Gaming Show (part of E3), where we showed a teaser trailer and a gameplay trailer recorded in-engine. The reception was extremely pleasing and the game's punchline: "What would you do, if your fears got hacked", stirred the imagination of journalists and gamers alike.

We have submitted >observer_ for the Game Connection Europe Awards where it was nominated for three awards: Best Console/PC Hardcore, Best Hardcore Game, Most Creative & Original.

In january 2017 we announced the partnership with Aspyr Media, who yet again became our publisher.

The game's release date for August 15th 2017 has been supported by the announcement of two renown actors: Rutger Hauer (Daniel Lazarski) of Blade Runner fame and Arkadiusz Jakubik (Janus) - one of the most known Polish actors of our time.
