Ronimo Games says for some games, perfect balance is impossible

An impossible tightrope act

Ronimo Games has a number of titles under their belt, include multiple entries in the Swords & Soldiers series. In a new dev blog from developer Joost van Dongen opens up about one of the frustrations of game development; the fact that some games just can't achieve a perfect balance. Check out a snippet from the blog below.

The final point I'd like to share today is both soothing and intensely frustrating: for any game that has significant complexity and variation, perfect balance is impossible. This is a soothing thought in the sense that it makes you realise that even if you were the best game designer in the world, your game would still not have perfect balance. It's also frustrating, because of course the goal of the game designer is to make the balance really good. Knowing that the balance will never be truly fantastic makes balancing a frustrating experience.

So, why is 'perfect' balance not possible? I've already mentioned above that as more variation is added, it becomes impossible to make all options equally strong under all circumstances. But there's more. What about players of different skills? Some characters/weapons/maps are bound to be more difficult to play than others. The result is that for beginners, the balance will be different than for pros. And what about simply different tastes? Some players prefer fun and variation, while other players prefer predictability and skill. The balance can't make both groups perfectly happy. Combined, all of these elements make it impossible to achieve 'perfect' balance.

Back and Better!

In 2009 Swords and Soldiers 2 was exclusively released for Wii UTM to a positive reception, before coming in an enhanced form to the Nintendo SwitchTM. Ronimo Producer Robin Meijer said “It’s great to be bringing Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon back to the Nintendo ecosystem where it started life, now bigger and better than ever. We hope our Nintendo fans are looking forward to some multiplayer mayhem!”.

Expect online and split-screen multiplayer, and the brand new ability to build a custom army for skirmish and multiplayer games! Mix and match units, spells and structures from all three factions into the ultimate army... or a messy mishmash. Either way, it’s sure to be great fun!

Together with development studio Two Tribes, Ronimo Games released Swords & Soldiers as a surprise in January for all fans of the series. If you own either game, you can enjoy a loyalty discount of when you buy the other game. Owners of the first game can get 20% off Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon, as well as the other way round!

Ronimo is especially grateful to all of their Kickstarter backers and long term fans who have been hoping for a Nintendo SwitchTM version since the original release on Wii UTM!

Ronimo’s Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon out on Nov 6th, 2018

UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS – October 24, 2018 - Ronimo Games just announced that their side-scrolling action strategy game Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon will be released on PC and PlayStation®4 this November 6, and on Nintendo Switch™ soon after!

So what’s included in the Shawarmageddon?

Swords and Soldiers 2 is a strategic multiplayer lane defense game coming to PC and PlayStation®4 this November 6, with a Nintendo Switch™ release to follow! Vikings face off against Persian and Demon armies in ferocious battles across the globe. Push the enemy back and smash their base with a legion of distinct units, spells and structures. If your opponent’s base still stands after all that, break the deadlock with one of the powerful heroes.

A 10 hour single player campaign sees you race against time to stop a tasty but terrifying apocalypse and is further bolstered by plenty of bonus challenges and mini-games. What begins as a simple mission to recover your favorite shawarma snack becomes a battle to prevent Shawarmageddon! Along the way you'll also collect units, spells and structures, which will allow you to build your own crazy mix by using the custom army feature. Build the army of your dreams - even use units from all three factions at once! Then, once your beard has grown and your swords sharpened, you can test your mettle either in local multiplayer or against other chieftains from around the world in online multiplayer!

How long has this been cooking?

The prequel Swords and Soldiers HD, which saw the Vikings battling Aztec and Chinese armies, was released in 2009 and since then has sold close to a million copies.

The first version of the sequel Swords and Soldiers 2 featured more resource management, hero units, and much more. It was released exclusively on the Wii U in 2015. After receiving great reviews from critics and players alike, including 90 from Destructoid and 85 from Nintendo Enthusiast, Ronimo

was determined to bring it to a wider audience one day. When Ronimo Games hit their 10 year anniversary last year, and nostalgically looked through their portfolio, they all had the same thought - why haven’t we done this yet?! Now, after testing the new expanded version thoroughly with fans at various game events, they can happily say that the day is almost here!

Nintendo Switch™

It’s official - Swords and Soldiers 2 will be released on Nintendo Switch™! The Wii U version had a great reception of course, and after many requests from the community we just had to look into a Switch™ release. We did a few tests, and decided to go for it. After some hard work we even have split-screen multiplayer working… and it’s awesome! We’re now working out the final details, and expecting to release in December. More news will follow!
