Blasphemous hits 1 million players worldwide

Sinners and saints, rejoice

The team behind Blasphemous have announced that the game has hit a major milestone. Since launch, Blasphemous has managed to move 1 million units across all platforms combined. To celebrate the occasion, the dev team shared a special video, which you can check out in the tweet above.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night's Miriam joins Blasphemous in a free update

Bloody good news

A new update is heading to Blasphemous on Feb. 18th, 2021, and it's going to introduce Miriam from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Best of all, this update is completely free! Read up on Miriam's arrival below.

Team17 and The Game Kitchen have teamed up with 505 Games and ArtPlay for a crossover that sees the character of Miriam from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night arrive in Cvstodia, seeking help from The Penitent One. The new mission is part of the free ‘Strife and Ruin’ update that launches on PC, Nintendo Switch™, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on 18th February.

Tasked with helping Miriam return to her world, players must complete a series of platforming challenges and collect shards to repair her portal home. Filled with traps that force the player to hone their precision platforming abilities, those who pass the test and help Miriam return to her world will have a special reward bestowed upon them.

‘Strife and Ruin’ also introduces Boss Rush Mode, which becomes available after completing the main storyline. Ramping up the challenge to new heights, the mode features courses containing a selection of bosses that players take on using any of their save files. Each run is assigned a score based on various factors, with medals available for the toughest of Penitents.

A Demake area has also been added that pays homage to classic 8-bit platformers, providing a linear experience, played inside an arcade cabinet that is hidden in a secret location on Cvstodia, with reimagined visuals to match the retro style. Core mechanics will change to suit the classic style as well, as The Penitent One strives to gather five golden skulls and defeat a new boss to reap the rewards. Continuing the retro theme, The Game Kitchen has also included several new render modes, emulating older TV effects that can be applied throughout the entire standard game.

New update available for Blasphemous

Fixing some sinful bugs

A new update is available for Blasphemous. Check out the full patch notes below.

Switch fixes

Fix to Switch memory issues, which could cause assets to appear as white boxes after an extended playtime.
Kickstarter backers with access to the Golden Burden skin will now also be given the Alloy of Sin skin

Key Fixes

Penitence Rewards – Rosary Beads.

Fixed an issue that caused Penitence rewards to reset after the credits, so players weren’t able to access their rewards. This is a retroactive fix, so you will be able to find the corresponding rewards you already earned in your current save slots.

Laudes – Post Fight Area

Fixed several issues with the location entered after the fight with Laudes, which could cause softlock, weird collisions, and even stop players from getting the reward located there.

Tres Angustias – “Dodge this”

Fixed an issue that caused Tres Angustias beam attack anticipation to appear outside the screen, so dodging them was only possible with the help of the Miracle.

Amanecidas Combat – Fight on!

Fixed issues during Amanecidas combats that created weird interactions after interrupting their attacks. This caused them to stop attacking anymore during the fight on rare occasions.

Ten Piedad – “You’re approaching me?!”

Fixed Ten Piedad fight so it can no longer be skipped by using the Linen of Golden Thread.

Other Fixes

Fixed an issue where the room in Gemino’s quest could be used to farm tears of atonement.
Fixed an issue which caused the main menu background selection labels to display incorrect titles.
Fixed an issue where Bleeding Miracle explosion didn’t cause damage to enemies.
Fixed an issue where players could get stuck inside a wall during a True Torment playthrough.
Fixed an issue that caused the Penitence Selection menu to behave incorrectly during a second playthrough.
Fixed an issue where the Chalice of Inverted Verses was not emptied after using a Prie Dieu warp point.
Fixed a LOT of issues causing diverse achievements to not unlock correctly.
Fixed map issues that caused some tiles to not reveal on rare occasions.
Fixed an issue that created duplicates of the Penitent One while button-mashing during the cutest animation in the game. Please, keep petting that dog though, he’s a really good boy.
Fixed an issue where the Ash Mountain wouldn’t slow down the Penitent One.
Fixed an issue that caused Esdras to remain still and refuse to fight back.
Fixed an issue that caused abandoned Penitences to remain marked as such, even after completing them in a later playthrough.

Free Blasphemous DLC unleashes new torment on players today

A hell of an experience

Team17 and The Game Kitchen are today expanding the world of brutal action-platformer Blasphemous with the launch of Stir of Dawn, free downloadable content delivering significant features and a New Game+ mode called ‘New Torment’ to the game.

Available now on PlayStation® 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch™, and PC, Stir of Dawn’s introduction of New Torment unlocks a new story branch that sees players journey to defeat the five Amanecidas, since Laudes – an ancient creation of the Miracle - has been awoken to challenge The Penitent One. Stir of Dawn also brings forth new items and executions for players to utilise, fresh areas to battle through, a new map system, updated voiceovers (including full Spanish VO), and other significant tweaks to the gameplay.

Players of the New Torment mode can choose from one of Three Penitences, each of which drastically change the gameplay experience:

Unwavering Faith is aimed at players who want to use magic, featuring regenerating fervour to execute special moves – which is lost when hit – and sword damage being slashed in half;

Bleeding Heart introduces a more classic gaming experience, featuring a set of stocks instead of a lifebar (to which everything deals one stock of damage), with enemies also respawning when entering rooms;

True Guilt is a Penitence that sees players lose maximum fervour when they die, at which point Tears of Atonement – the in-game ‘currency’ – are placed in a fragment. If another death is encountered before the fragment is retrieved, those Tears are lost for good. On top of all this flasks cannot be used to recover; instead they grant The Penitent One fervour.

Blasphemous: Stir of Dawn key features:

Experience a new level of torment: Those who have completed the main campaign can take on a higher level of difficulty as part of the ‘New Game+’ New Torment mode, which also includes the brand new story content that all players are receiving

Greater variety of gameplay options: Three different playstyles are available in New Torment through the all-new Penitence system, which offers tantalising rewards for those that can handle the handicaps that come with them

Overcome new challenging bosses: Go forth on a journey to defeat the five Amanecidas, encountering new characters including Jibrael and Nacimiento along the way

Be more brutal: The counterattack mechanic has been improved and seven new executions have been added, keeping combat impactful

A more balanced Blasphemous: Enemies have been adjusted, new animations added, and players can now even pet the dog
Get around Cvstodia in new ways: Travel is made easier for The Penitent One with further additions like a new map system and more warp points.
