Star Ocean: First Departure R Now Available on Switch

Now departing for the stars

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 5, 2019) – SQUARE ENIX® today announced that STAR OCEAN® First Departure R™ , the HD remaster of the classic sci-fi RPG, is now available for the Nintendo Switch™ system and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system.

Originally released in the west on the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, STAR OCEAN First Departure R tells the story of a young swordsman, Roddick, and his companions who first set off on a journey to find the cure to a deadly disease, before becoming involved in an adventure that spans across a sea of stars. This HD remaster of the game includes the following features:

Full Voiceover – Players can choose between the original full voice cast from the PSP® system version of the game in either Japanese or English, or the newly recorded version, featuring the Japanese voice cast from the original Super Famicom version, which was released in Japan only.

New Character Illustrations – Players can opt for the original character illustrations from STAR OCEAN First Departure, or brand-new versions drawn by the famous illustrator Katsumi Enami (STAR OCEAN: THE LAST HOPE™)

Speed Mode – Players can traverse the world more swiftly.

Adjusted Game Balance – Adjusted battle difficulty enables players to experience more challenges in combat.

As a member of the village’s local “Defence Force” tasked with the protection of Kratus, Roddick learns of a mysterious disease that has broken out in the neighboring town. Those infected turn to stone, but continue to live on in a petrified state.

Famitsu shares development progress updates on Star Ocean: First Departure R and Katanakami

Both games in the final stretch

This week's issue of Famitsu features previews for both Star Ocean: First Departure R and Katanakami. Within those previews, we find out how far along in development each game is. According to Square-Enix, Star Ocean: First Departure R is currently 85% complete, which makes sense with the Dec. 5th, 2019 release date sneaking up. As for KATANAKAMI, Spike Chunsoft says the title is 70% complete.

Pre-orders for the PlayStation®4 system will include a commemorative PlayStation®4 Theme and a digital mini soundtrack from the STAR OCEAN Live 2019 concert.
