Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time's development was "mostly finished" by the time the game was announced

When you're with Jack, time flies

The game industry has taught us that the wait between a game's reveal trailer and retail release can take multiple years. It happens all the time, with some titles taking 2, 3, 4, or more years to release after their initial reveal. With Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, the situation was quite different.

In an interview with NintendoEverything, director Hiroaki Matsui revealed that work on Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time was pretty much wrapped by the time the public found out about the game.

Well. We actually started its production from spring 2018 and finished the overall development process at the end of last year. So, the development period is a little over two years. At the time of the announcement in February, the game was mostly finished already. In fact, we were going to have a playable demo at PAX East, but we had to cancel those plans due to the coronavirus. However, the extra time gave us an opportunity add more refinements to the game with ASG.

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time director discusses game length and difficulty

Jack attack

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is coming to Switch on Aug. 21st, 2020, and hopefully it'll do the series justice. Game Director Hiroaki Matsui certainly believes it will, and he also thinks the game will provide quite a unique challenge. He shared his thoughts in an interview with NintendoEverything.

“The game has a flow for the player to acquire many skills while proceeding with the play. Jack’s mobility, physical ability, and battle technique will be expanded as the players continues through the game. Naturally, the degree of freedom as a warrior will increase, but in higher-difficulty modes, more challenging enemies are waiting for the player, so I’m sure even hardcore players can enjoy the game up to a fairly challenging level.”

Tackling the game's challenges on normal difficulty should take you about 10 hours or so. That said, you won't be able to unlock all the collectible items and skills with just a normal run-through, so Matsui hopes players will try their hand at the “Master Samurai” and “Master of Masters” difficulties.
