Pikmin 3 Deluxe is the fastest-selling franchise installment in Japan, and is soon to be the best-selling entry

That's what we like to see!

Pikmin 3 Deluxe may not be blowing the sales charts away like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it's not a failure by any stretch of the imagination. As a matter of fact, the game is putting up some of the best numbers the franchise has seen in Japan.

With this week's Japanese sales numbers, Pikmin 3 Deluxe managed to sell 499k physical units so far. Considering the game released at the very end of October, that's quite an impressive number for the franchise. It also makes Pikmin 3 Deluxe the fastest-selling entry in the franchise for Japan.

The way data is trending, Pikmin 3 Deluxe will soon be the best-selling entry in Japan as well. Pikmin 2 sold roughly 480k units, while the original Pikmin did over 500k. Pikmin 3 Deluxe is at 499k, but again, that's just physical numbers. For all we know, Pikmin 3 Deluxe could be the best-selling entry already when you factor in digital numbers.

Nintendo points out that many consumers who purchased Animal Crossing: New Horizons in Japan went on to purchase Pikmin 3 Deluxe

According to Nintendo's recent Q&A session from their financial briefing, Nintendo has found out that consumers in Japan who purchased Animal Crossing: New Horizons eventually went on to purchase Pikmin 3 Deluxe. The quote is as follows:

Question: It seems like many of the previously released titles that hit the million mark in this six-month period were ones that people can enjoy playing together. Were these games consciously recommended to consumers who played Animal Crossing: New Horizons or is this the result of a natural accumulation of sales? And looking back, what are your thoughts on this situation in the first half of the year?

Answer (courtesy of President of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa):

We want those consumers who first played Nintendo Switch because of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to become aware of and play as many different titles as possible, regardless of whether those titles are new or evergreen. Ring Fit Adventure is one such example. The recently released Pikmin 3 Deluxe has frequently been chosen as the next title after Animal Crossing: New Horizons by many consumers, especially in Japan. The Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary campaign is raising the visibility of the various Mario titles available on Nintendo Switch, and we're starting to see good results from that. And as you pointed out, the popularity of titles that people can enjoy together and are possible only on Nintendo Switch, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party, is increasing greatly, and we believe this can be seen in the performance of titles that have broken the million-seller mark.
