Manga/Anime/TV

Well, halfway into the spring season, I was wondering what has stuck for you guys?
I am currently watching:

  • The Flash

  • Arrow

  • Mikagura School Suite

  • Snafu Too

  • Food Wars

  • Danmachi

  • Kuroko no Basket

For the anime, I listed it with my personal favorites at the bottom.

I haven't been watching current anime (although I did watch a few that just ended their run) because I am mostly catching up on some slightly older stuff. It'd be too hard to narrow down my favorites and I've been watching way too many at random intervals.

As for real TV, I don't watch a heck of a lot of it. Been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., watched some of Forever & The Goldbergs, bits of The Flash, and earlier, The Walking Dead.

I also watch the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Otherwise, I mostly watch older stuff I missed out on.

I watch quite a few shows, but unfortunately, no animes since I can't stream online. Right now my favorite show is Turn: Washington's Spies. I also like The Blacklist.

All of my other shows are on break : Backstrom, Person of Interest, Vikings, Suits, Graceland and Hawaii Five-0. (edit) And Archer.

I'll probably check out Wayward Pines which starts Thursday on Fox.

(edit) Moldyclay's post reminded me, I do watch TMNT, Teen Titans Go, Amazing World of Gumball, Clarence, and Breadwinners when they have new episodes. Gotta have something to watch with the kids and those are some good ones.

Anime for this season:

Shoukegi no Souma

Oregairu 2

DxD BorN

Owari no Seraph

Nisekoi:

and I can't understand what my husband is saying season 2.

I haven't watched anime in forever (really gotta catch up with One Piece), but I've been following/watching a couple of TV shows.

Sadly, since I live in the Netherlands, series that I'm interested in (aka the ones from the US of A) don't air until approx. 129308 year later, so I have to download everything. So it's not really watching TV as it is watching laptop.

Anyway, lately I've been watching the brilliant 6th season of Community, the 5th season of Workaholics, 2nd season of Brooklyn nine-nine, and Party Down and Star Trek TOS.

I've also been rewatching Curb Your Enthusiasm since it seems unlikely a 9th season will be announced anytime soon.

Brooklyn nine-nine is very good.

Someone should add movies to the title, and maybe even music, so it can be GN's all-purpose media thread.

Anyway, I've started watching The X-Files recently. The first episode is absolutely terrible, but I've sort of hooked since the second episode. The show has some problems, but every episode entrances me, kind of the same way a UFO's lights entrance you as you're driving down the highway... Something just compels you to move towards that beam of light coming down from the UF- I mean, watch the program on your television set. I used to be really interested with these kinds of things when I was young, so that's definitely part of it. The characters are great, the variety of mysteries is nice, and the cliffhangers and unsatisfying endings just keep you coming back. Also the theme song is eerily wonderful.

I was thinking of maybe splitting off into two threads. manga/anime and tv/movies. I was thinking it might make it easier to separate the western and Japanese cultures and make each thread more focused.

I'm not sure about 'separating cultures' since there are Japanese movies and shows, and there are Western comics and cartoons, but yeah, I suppose for better organization (and therefore better readability), it would be best to make a comics/cartoon/anime/manga thread and a tv/movies thread.

I guess I was trying to say different genres...but that still isn't right. I think you know what I mean though about how they are similar yet different. One of the benefits of separating imo would be that their is more overlap between anime/manga (obviously) and things like movie/tv (like DC).

Ongoing stuff that I'm watching is mostly Food Wars, Snafu and Game of Thrones. Both Food Wars and Snafu has surprised me so far and both in a good way, the latter because I didn't actually enjoy the first season of Snafu as much as many others did. This season seems to be flowing better with less unremarkable filler but the true question is whether or not the plot will advance.
As for Game of Thrones, it is always amazing and this season is no different.

I would strongly recommend Danmachi to people. It seems a lot of people here are watching SNAFU and Food Wars and Danmachi for me is on the same level.

I haven't watched any new anime in years. I've been way to busy the last 7 or 8 years with getting married and moving and having kids and other stuff to watch any at all. Just a few months ago I finally started going through and watching what I have. I have a whole shelf full of Anime DVD's that I have had for over a decade and never got time to watch. Once I'm done with all those I can start watching some newer stuff, I don't really know anything about anything that has come out in the last 10 years.

As far as TV goes, I mostly watch old stuff too. The only new thing I really keep up on is TMNT. I really love the new series, I thought I was going to hate it initially, but they have done an excellent job with it. I like it almost as much as I do the original series, and that's saying a lot. It's great that they are bringing back so many characters from the original. Also seeing all the references to the original series and movies and stuff is great.

I have a huge list of anime that I intend to watch when I get around to it. I am currently watching through The Legend of Korra and then play to watch what I missed from MLP in terms of cartoons. http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Mako91

I tend to read manga more than watch anime but I've been keeping up with the following series so far:
OnePunch-Man
Sougeki no Souma (Food Wars)
Gunnm Mars Chronicles
Toriko
A.R.M. (All Rounder Meguru)
Kingdom
Boku no Hero Academia
Haikyuu!
World Trigger
Seven Deadly Sins
Silver Spoon
Black Clover
Teppuu
Giant Killing

I have a hard time finding anime, new and old, that interests me. I want one like Cute High Earth Defense Club, and Cuticle Tantei Inaba. Silly, well-animated anime with plenty of 'Yaoi fanservice', and with no tragedy or overly serious drama.

None of the on-going anime, aside from Yokai Watch, interests me much. Sad

I've recently (by recently I mean recent months) discovered the manga "One Punch Man" aka The Greatest Thing Created By Human Hands Ever(tm).

It's getting an anime adaptation and I couldn't be more excited.

Hi

I love anime and manga.

just been watching persona 4 anime and rewatching steins gate, which is fab.

I just watched the first episode of wayward pines which was very very good abit like truman show twinpeaks mashup.

Once in a blue moon I watch regular tv for sports related events but other then that I'm not caught up on current Anime/TV/Movie stuff.

Last anime series I watched all the way through was Kill La Kill and I thought it was fine. I have dvd sets of shows like Korra and Breaking Bad I can catch up on when I want to. Though to tell the truth I'm not in a rush to watch stuff lol.

Junjou Romantica, most popular Yaoi/Shonen-Ai manga/anime, is finally, after 7 years, getting it's third Anime Season in July.

Finally!

Little SIster #1 suggested that Iwatch Gugure! Kokkuri-San on Cruchyroll. So, I finished it and it was a'ight.

I hit hit the random button and got a live drama called Last Cinderella. I wanted to hit the button again, because I'm not really into big romance stories, but after some thought, I figured that I may as well give the show a chance after a few episodes.
It started out well, and I really liked the main character's personal traits, but then the show started to become like other romance dramas out there, and the ending was pulling me in two different directions. Sakura's character really changes when she's around Hiroto -- super lovey dovey. What happened to that "old man" personality that she had from the start? It all went away somewhere about halfway through the series.

I need a good story that has a strong tomboy lead. Someone who's into sports, fighting, getting dirty and things like that. It can be live action or anime. It seems like most tomboy characters are just secondary, and aren't usually the main focus of the story, or that the story is about them becoming more feminine (usually) to impress someone. I don't want that.

Oh, and Little Sister #2 is telling me to watch Ouran High School Host Club.
Should I?

Well, I haven't had a chance to look ahead to the summer anime list. What are you all planning to give a shot?

Also, what was your top anime of Spring 2015.

I would say Kuroko no Basketball or Danmachi. Shukogeki no Soma was also pretty great, but at least that's not done yet.

I've been checking the new season.

Depending on how serious you take the medium it'll be lame or amusing. We have fanservicy anime like Monster Girls, and Shimoneta. Charlotte, which feels like it'll be like Angel Beats! I still have to check Gangsta, and coming this week starts Prison School. Until now I think Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa... has a chance to be good. I like a lot the character designs and expressions, though it still didn't set a mood for it's story.

Here's the complete list: http://psgels.net/2015/06/13/2015-summer-season-preview/

Tell me if you find something special.

I have 14 anime on my list to check out. The genres are really varied from what I usually watch (slice of life or action or comedy) so it'll be interesting seeing what happens. Usually I'm able to narrow down my list before the season starts to like five or six, but I'm not really sure how to start this season off. Will slowly watch a little bit of them all over the next week or so. I will be sure to leave my updates here.

I'm also continuing with Shukogeki no Soma and just started Assassination classroom.

So, do you go by elimination, like if a series becomes boring you drop it, or mix the good with the bad. [This looks interesting, oh well, let's go back to the train wreck].

I'll like to give a chance to Shukogeki no Soma, though I don't know what to expect. I know is food and fan service but aside from that I haven't seen a hook on how it distinguishes itself.

Yeah, typically I look at a website that lists all the upcoming season anime, read the descriptions and look at the included poster to see what to give a shot. Then I watch the PV to further shorten my list. I usually start watching the new season one week after the season starts starting from first airing to most recent. I can usually tell after an episode whether or not I will like an anime. For the most part, I am pretty good about trimming my initial list down right away.

Once I drop an anime (which is quite rare as I usually only have four good ones on the list by the time the new season airs), I rarely ever go back to it.

Hey have you seen School Live?

I'll not say much but...

Check the premise in wikipedia if you want but I bet it'll be more interesting going to it blind.

I wasn't planning on watching it, but hey why not. I'll add it to the list of things to watch.

Wait...what is going on? The ending of the first episode came out of nowhere!

What? Didn't you see the hints? :p

I wonder if there will be any anime soon that's like 'Kimi to Boku', or 'Cute High School Earth Defense Club' or so. With bishies being overly close to eachother. :P

... probably not.

I don't really watch that genre, but here are a few you might like (disclaimer, I haven't watched these at all other than the first one so I don't really know what you should expect):

daily life of high school boys
Junjo Romantica: Pure Romance
Makura no Danshi

Junjou Romantica is my favorite anime ever, actually (tied with Fullmetal Alchemist). XD A great suggestion, but sadly, I've already seen them. Smile
And that first one I have also seen. Though not finished, so, thanks for reminding me!
Not sure about taht third one. Will look it up. ^^

Thank you, Blade.

No problem! Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but that genre isn't really my forte.

So, I want to start reading manga. I've always been too lazy to read manga, but I feel like I can start reading some now. So anyone have any suggestions? The only one I know I am interested is Boku no Hero Academia, but I wonder if anyone else had any other suggestions? Preferably a manga that has not had an anime adaptation, but even it is an anime, I'll still consider reading it. So anyone have any suggestions?

What kind of things are you looking for? Is anything fair game?

One that I really enjoy is Handa-Kun. It's a comedy about misunderstandings. It is only like 12 chapters in so far though and is infrequently updated.

I'm up for anything really. I'm all ears.

Firstly you could try to fish something at mangaGAF: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1075205

Though I suppose I should also warn its kind of a double edge sword since they post impressions of manga they're reading and while its focused on giving impressions you could get unexpected spoilers of something. At the same time you could find something unexpected.

As for recent manga I've read, the main one I'm following is Sakuranbo Syndrome which has 9 of its 11 volumes translated. It's more or less a soap opera about a college girl with a disease that's making her younger, the only way to treat said disease is by kissing a specific person, because since. Still the manga develops very well the main cast being a man that works at a boutique store, his female boss which he gets with her, and this diseased girl.

Another one is MAYONAKA NO X GITEN which in short, gives me Mirai Nikki vibes. It's a body swapping story involving lots of twists and shock moments of thrill.

KOHARU NO HIBI is a yandere romantic disturbing series. While not violent the implications of having the obsess girlfriend ring hard with this one. And depending on tastes you could either be cringed by the subject matter or kind of get morbidly curious on seeing how far it goes.

At the moment that's what I've got.

Has anyone found something really good for the summer season yet. I've watched six series so far (like 1 or 2 episodes each) and I haven't found anything that has seriously hooked me. I guess Rokka no Yuusha is my favorite from what I have seen.

I'm currently watching Working!!!, Gangtsa, Charlotte, and Monster Museme no Iru Nichijou, I'm enjyoing all of them at the moment.

Have you ever watched assassination classroom?

I plan on watching it, but I have not seen it yet.

I watched like eight episodes of the first season of Working. Is there really enough to make it three seasons?

Not sure. But there is a focus this time around on a different relationship which changes a lot of things. The main "couple" has lost some attention so far.

For what are you up to, since aside from that anime I can't spoil (Gakkou Gareshi - School Live!). Everything is still up in the air as it being good.

I mean personally I'm digging Overlord because the characters look very likeable, and the yandere girls appeal to me. Jitsu wa watashi wa, is also charmful but I think it's more of a popcorn show, since it still lacks conflict, I mainly watching it because I like the character designs, and the subs worked in how the main heroine has a regional accent.

And lastly I LOLed at Prison School, but I can't really reccomend that much because the humor isn't for everyone, it has these dominatrix and in your face deprave setups and likely tons of physical comedy.

Check out my updated list below.

Well, here is what I am watching. Still haven't dropped anything. I will rank them from what I like the best to worst, but there isn't much separation.

Let me know if you guys are watching anything the same, or if there is something that I am missing or should give a shot.

  • Shokugeki no Souma
  • (Food Wars)
Holdover from last season. Not as good as the last season's episodes, but understandable as they are transitioning to the main arc for this new cour i would guess.

  • Prison School
  • (Mature)
Very ecchi. VERY HILARIOUS. If you can handle the preview, give it a shot. Episode 3 was a true story of brotherhood :p

  • Rokka no Yuusha
One of my favorites of the new season. Action and adventure anime which is something this season is missing.

  • Gakkou Gurashi!
  • (School Live!)
Give this one a shot. Watch at least two episodes before you make a judgement on it. It is NOT what it seems to be.

  • Joukamachi no Dandelion
  • (Castle Town Dandelion)

  • Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai
  • (A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist)
Watered down Prison school with more "cheap gag" comedy. Still pretty good though.

  • Danchigai
Short 3-4 minute slice of life episodes. Quick and easy to watch. Also humorous.

  • Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri

  • Charlotte

  • Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou
  • (Everyday Life with Monster Girls)
Typical ecchi anime with monsters. Good filler anime to watch.

  • Jitsu wa Watashi wa
  • ( Actually, I Am)

  • Chaos Dragon: Sekiryuu Seneki
Only saw the first episode of this one. Seems like something to binge watch maybe. I dunno about this one.

  • Classroom☆Crisis
Not really feeling this one. I like the antagonist character though.

  • Still need to see the first episode of:

  • Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
  • (Snow white with the red hair)

  • God Eater

  • Overlord

What do you think of Charlotte, since I'm on the edge of dropping it do to it having annoying and boring characters dragging what could have been a fun lead.

Also not as disliked but in need of some conflict it's Jitsu wa. I'm liking it for the character designs, still it has been very typical. One of those series that isn't bad but hasn't really put anything to call home about.

I'm hoping Overlord delivers since it kind of feels like it's building well it's story, if anything just the pacing is in need of stepping up since it is slow. Still I kind of dig the type of power fantasy it is delivering.

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime seems to be a mixed bag from what I've read, some love it, some hate it.

Also Shimoneta's last episode; SWEET JESUS. I know Prison School pushes the limits of censorship more, but I didn't expect that.

Also for anyone who is on the fence of School Live!, GAF put a hooking opening thread. (Just be sure to mainly see the opening post, 'cause spoilers a few posts below). http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1084436

I'm also on the verge of dropping charlotte. The lack of an antagonist is really hurting it. Each episode is basically the same so far...and I'm hoping that's just so that they can establish a team dynamic and introduce the main characters. Judgin by the opening, the four mains have been established. Also, I think that if the scientists were to beat the student council to a person with powers, that could lead to an interesting arc. Imagine the team having to pull off an infiltration/rescue mission ala Assassination Classroom. Would be much more interesting than what is currently being output. I like the character design (aesthetically) though and the potential is there, so I'll give it a little bit more.

Jitsu wa is kinda lame. The character design is average imo and it has no real plot. I've noticed a lot of the anime this season are the type of series that I would rather watch all at once than have to wait a week for.

Overlord I'll have to give a chance later this week.

Going to go watch the latest Shimoneta now. You've got me hyped for it!

Also, thanks for recommending school live. I was gonna skip it, but it has quickly became one of my must sees. Have you watched Rokka no Yuusha or Joukamachi no Dandelion?

The lack of emotional investment is making me wanna drop it. Since the beginning it has felt like it has shown the most negative aspects from Angel Beats! But at least Angel Beats has like you said an antagonist, but also I think you cared more about certain characters.

Perhaps Jitsu Wa is more charming to me since it kind of feels like it has sort of a cheesy delivery that I've come to expect from latin american soap operas. Still you're right, it hasn't really presented a conflict to get invested. Also in my case I've preferred watching each weekly since I can then watch several things a week and not just devote time to a single thing, also because most are fine. If anything this season mainly lacked memorable openings, again, they're fine but they're not in the same level as Mirai Nikki's or FMA.

Be in mood for dialogue, Overlord has plenty. [Kind of feels they stuck a bit too much to the VN].

I missed a scene after the credits.

It's the surprise of the season for me, it's one of my favorite narrative tropes,

Spoiler

I haven't watched those, I'm not too much into medieval fantasy, but I suppose what's important is if the mystery is compelling. And what's the other one about?

Dandelion is about a family of 9 kids who are all in a public competition to be elected the next king. The anime focuses on the super shy red hair girl (seen in the poster), although each character seems to be getting air time. The episodes are typically broken down into three self contained segments. It is a slice of life/feel good/comedy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-QHssRqi2Y <-- short clip from the anime.

Ok, just finished watching that episode. WOW! I guessed that it was going to be her, but man, I did not see that scene coming. That might've been more hardcore than Prison school.

I'm sure Prison School will pass that. But still, Shimoneta played it well, best episode yet, from that series.

Agree on both points. Both anime seem to still have their best ahead of them. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Episode 4 of Jitsu wasn't too bad. The comedy was there and they are building upthe harem/romance aspect. I gotta say, I really like Shirigami's voice and personality. Very fresh and original. (Eromine-kun haha)

I think the saving grace atm is the girl with horns, since it seems that could be either the antagonist or at least a foil to the protagonists. Also I liked the tease to the other character. Wait a minute... this isn't a spoiler since I haven't read the manga, but there's also a girl flashing in the opening, this guy also flashes....

Could this be a werewolf type of character?

Where in the intro are you talking about?

The red head with the collar showing her boobs, then it cuts with her and the guy we saw in this episode chained by the wrists and the male and female symbols in the background. I was suspicious at first but it's very likely this is a gender bender character. Or just two characters that have the same taste in clothes and flashing themselves.

Ah, I never watched the opening now that I think about it. Where in the episode was there flashing? I'm thinking back but I can't remember at all. And what do you mean by gender bender in this case? My guess is that they are twins.

In the last episode the gossip girl alluded to the strange occurrences in the school, and one of those was a guy that seemingly goes on flashing people in the hallways.

Maybe, or maybe not. I'm just saying the attire and both flashing making it seem like the same person. Also do to most of the cast being supernatural in one way or the other. But who knows, maybe they're werewolves, I mean, they both wear collars.

oh yeah, now I remember. I would say werewolves is a good guess.

Seems I was double right, I also liked how it was more seductive than fanservicey the episode. It was both sexy and kind of weird.

Tell me you didn't drop Charlotte yet. Ep. 6 looks to be a turning point.

Should I bother? If I didn't even watched the Baseball episode?

Can this series be saved?

IMO, the only episodes you need to watch from the first 5 episodes are the first one, and the one where they introduce Yusa and Misa. The part where they talk about Nao's brother is also important. Episode 5 could also be sorta important, but not neccessary.

Episode 6 is definitely worth it. Before you completely drop the series, at least watch that episode.

(Replying here because I can't to the other one.)

Yeah, I haven't watched past episode 4 yet in Jitsu. It seems kind of like something I would rather binge watch than keep up with. Will probably catch up on slower anime days.

I understand, it's more of a personal taste I'm having with that series, since it a very particular type of hokiness. I was just mentioning it since I deduced exactly what was implied.

Anyway, so far Overlord, Prison School and Shimoneta are getting consistently better. Monmosu still hasn't bored me, although it's a popcorn series. And School Live! has me sharpening the knife, since it's very clear where it is going, is more of a matter of when it'll happen.

Yeah, at the end of episode four it seemed like he was a werewolf. Kudos to you on the good detective work.

Prison school consistently got better in the beginning, although the last two episodes seemed to be average. They still had their comedic moments, but overall they were slightly lesser imo.

I haven't watched the latest Shimoneta yet (will get to it in an hour or so), but I agree that it is rapidly getting better.

Hmm, I should create a new midseason ranking.

This sure did feel like fanservice week. From Classroom Crisis to Charlotte to Castletown Dandelion, everyone got in on it.

Ushi to Tora is a awesome anime.

Lovely blend of comedy and serious.

I was considering watching that, but it got lost in the huge list I have for this season. I'll give it a shot later today.

Oh, you won't be disappointed. XD Something about it is just very compelling. I love it. It is also pretty gorgeous, and has cool action.

And it is very silly.

Also... anyone here watching the likes of Junjou Romantica or Love Stage, or so? Am I really alone?

Forever alone my friend, forever alone.

I'm really enjoying Gangsta, as well as prison school. Those are my favorites of the season so far.

You are a fan of Nisekoi right. I think you would like Jitsu wa Watashi and Castle Town dandelion. The first takes the harem aspects of nisekoi while the later takes the comedy and kawaii.

I heard about Jitsu Wa Watashi, but when I looked at the art of the PV page, I was a bit turned off. I probably just judged a book by its cover. But I probably won't add anymore series for this season. I don't like to add to many shows on my watch list.

So I started watching Gangsta. I'm only on episode 4, but it seems pretty interesting. Nicholas is a true badass.

Yeah. It's a good show so far. I just hope they dive more into the hooker girls backstory.. The voice actor for Nicholas does a great job playing a deaf man.

Rewatching Cardcaptor Sakura.

And waiting for the new episodes of Saint Seiya Soul of Gold.

And waiting for the subbed episodes of Hoshi no Kirby.

Nothing current caught your eye?

I don't really get into current stuff nowadays. Last time I did was when I was watching Naruto Shippuden and after some fillers and breaks I decided to skip some arcs and went straight to the manga.

I'm also distanced from anime communities, so I don't listen much about what's current and what not. I do get interested sometimes from pics on the internet but they tend to be old series. Right now I made a list and some of them are Studio Ghibli movies, and other series like Chi's Sweet Home.
