Wii U Virtual Console Thread 2.0 (With complete list of leftovers)

Hello again! Well, it seems that sadly the old VC thread was lost with the new website, so I decided to restart the Wii U VC thread as releases are picking up again due to N64 and DS VC games.
If you knew me from the old website, you likely may have noticed that I made a big master list of every single VC game from the Wii VC, which ones came over to Wii U VC and in what regions, etc. Well, I did some digging around and found a backup of that list, so here it is, updated to include info from as recent as today.

...And I'll update this first post as much as I can to keep it up to date. Sadly my saved version was only up until March, so there may still be a few holes in my list. The new formatting of this site also can easily cause formatting errors considering how this was made with the older format in mind, so I'll try to get those fixed sometime soon. For now let me know if I missed anything and I'll add it, and of course feel free to discuss the Wii U VC here, including latest releases, your hopes for future games and more.

This topic is evidence why this set-up is awful for a forum. The 'front page' of the forums should only have previews or topic titles, not entire posts.
That said, awesome work, as I often try cross referencing both lists off wikipedia when discussing what's left and usually get sidetracked.

Exactly. It's better on mobile, at least, but yeah, I hope they'll implement a real front page.

I'm making a point to try to work on that this weekend. It's been an eye-sore (IMO) ever since I threw it up here to begin with just to get something going.

No, yeah, it's still better than nothing. This topic just made it obvious why this isn't a good long-term solution.

This setup is better than nothing, but somewhat inferior to the previous setup sadly, and not really a forum setup. Honestly forums are mainly used by computer, and best used by computer. That is who that section should be geared to, and while still usable by mobile, it would be far better than this which feels like fan articles with comments, not an actual forum section.
On another note, still have my fingers crossed for Mystical Ninja starring Goemon, and Goemon's mystic adventures

I wonder if Konami is going to support the Virtual Console since they are switching over to mobile? It's pretty sad to see them go, as I will not be purchasing phone games and they have been one of my favorite developers in the past. But, it's not as if they have done anything good in years (I don't like Metal Gear at all despite repeated attempts to play the games, but it seems to be the last thing they made that people still liked). Luckily I own most of their great games on the original consoles, but I would hope they would at least put them on consoles in the future, especially since they own Hudson which means they have all the Turbografx 16 stuff which is very expensive to buy original copies of.

I would argue it increases the likely-hood, as they already have quite a few on Wii-u VC, and they are after all the cheap little effort money they can get and the VC is an easy way

They still do in Japan so you can count on it. Yuichi (Konami's "Retro" guy of sorts, he helped bring Suikoden II to PSN) likes the VC here too so it's inevitable we'll get more games. I just hope they can bring those TG16 games over here.

I hope so. I really just want them around long enough for a few Hudson games to transition and to finish the Castlevania games.

I still need Dawn of Sorrow & Portrait of Ruin and they never finished the Gameboy games on 3DS.

Sigh, on the one hand, I have actually found a place with a copy of Goemon's Mystic Adventure(N64) for a decent price(well, its market price, which is higher than I like but not horrible either), on the other hand I want to see if it comes to wii-u N64 VC along with Mystical Ninja starring Goemon, since it would be cheaper, and seems somewhat likely since every other western released Goemon game is already on the e-shop and Konami aren't the ones to pass up free money... hmm decisions

Well luckily the forum is better organized and my list isn't broken anymore, so I'll add a few updates.

Joining MMZ2 tomorrow is the Jaleco game Super E.D.F for the SNES. Surprised Jaleco came back after being dead for the start of the VC to release Brawl Brothers, only to become dead again and come back for Bases Loaded, only to become dead yet again to bring EDF to the VC. Hopefully they keep it up, as I hope for City Connection or R-Type.

I've been having a blast playing through alot of the classic games on both the Wii U and 3DS VCs. My hope is to see the japanese import of Rondo of Blood to re-release on the Wii U VC. I have it on the Wiis, however with no save states it gets frustrating fast when playing the later stages.

Per Nintendo of America's games hub page we're getting another Hamster/Jaleco VC game: the Super NES brawler Rival Turf. This is in addition to the previously-announced two versions of Megaman Battle Network 4, Megaman Battle Network 4 Blue Moon and Megaman Battle Network 4 Red Sun).
EDIT on May 28th 2015: Megaman Zero 3 (GBA) has surprisingly joined the lineup this week(in-game instruction manual scan mentions the GBA linkup to get chips for MMBN4, might be why we're getting it), making for four VC games altogether this week. Further, for those with a PS3, PSP or Vita, Megaman 8 gets it's PSOne Classic re-release today as well (complete with it's unintently bad English voiceacting).

In addition, Natsume USA has also said that in June and July, some of their GBA games will be coming out to the Wii U VC. They haven't specified which ones however. Also, six more GBA Wii U VC titles from their quarters will be coming out at a later, unspecified date.

After a month of being busy I updated the list. I think it's up to date now, but if I missed something let me know! Honestly at the moment I'm still hoping for Golden Sun The Lost Age to come to the NA VC, along with the possible miracle of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games on VC around the time Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon launches.

Anybody else notice how we only have first party N64 games so far? admittedly, there's been only 6(I think, Thedreaminghawk you need to update the list.), but that is a curious. The release of OoT this week in both NA and EU makes me wonder if we're about to see more games being released, and a steady stream of third party N64 games would be a nice way to round out the rest of the summer, and that includes games on the wii VC, and a number that weren't due to technical limitations that seem to be bypassed

But ya, a guy can hope

List updated. And I have a bad feeling that we'll likely only get first party N64 games again, since there's still no word on Controller Pak support and coding issues for games like Harvest Moon 64 still exist. Mario Kart 64 will literally be the game that decides the fate of N64 VC since that game required a Controller Pak for Ghost data to even run. I imagine some games that just save with it like Goemon could come to VC due to restore points, but the ones that absolutely require it aren't looking likely at this point, unfortunately.

Well, they did manage to get around DK64's issues

DK64 had no coding or Controller Pak issues. The only issue it had was the appearance of Jet-Pac since Rare owns that game. It only came to Wii U VC because Microsoft allowed Nintendo to use Jet-Pac somehow.

Really? I thought it had some funny coding in order to fully use the N64's full power

Seems that everyone is catching up this week. Europe gets M&L DS and Japan gets Paper Mario so I'm guessing we'll get Super Ghouls and Ghosts R, Golden Sun The Lost Age or Metroid Zero Mission this week if the pattern is the same.

The three Kirby games mentioned by Nintendo of America's twitter page as being stated for release on July 30th 2015 (tommorow) have been revealed through NoA's hub pages:
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64) - hub page: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/1n0OJ83ztBZYk-ZuJpYimZLZxcK-ORdr
Kirby Squeak Squad (DS) - hub page: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/ExI7tw00yk7iSC3gsoNBVPSh8FI0PiQR
Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii legacy) - hub page: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/PPFt723pipF-JPLtqljZpHUrNF-bJZSL
Earlier today, these had been ousted by updated ESRB ratings, as seen in a GN news story (sent by TheDreamingHawk); now the NoA hub pages are up for this trio of Kirby titles, pretty much confirming that these are the three Kirby VC games being released tomorrow.
As stated in the tweet from NoA, this trio of Kirby VC games are being released to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the release of Kirby's Dream Land for the Gameboy, initally released in August 1992.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland is the fourth overall Wii legacy to hit the North American eShop. The last Wii legacy released on the North American eShop was Metroid Prime Trilogy, released at the end of January 2015, nearly seven months ago.

Golden Sun The Lost Age finally comes to NA VC as part of the tradeoff tomorrow. Also some game called Onimusha tactics is coming out but I have zero knowledge of the series so I don't know if it's good or not, but according to metacritic it's average compared to the other strategy RPGs.

The tradeoff of VC games between regions continues tommorow (August 13th 2015) apparently, this time with a Wii legacy game: the JRPG game Pandora's Tower. While published by Nintendo in Europe and Japan, this was published by XSEED in North America (who currently also publishes the current-gen Ys games for the PSP, PSVita, and PC via Steam/GoG/Humble Bundle along with some other major Nihon Falcom JRPGs such as Trails In The Sky, Brandish: The Dark Revenant and the forthcoming Trails of Cold Steel). If memory serves, Pandora's Tower was one of the last major Wii titles released in North America, back in April 2012.

Incidentally, Pandora's Tower is the fifth Wii legacy title released on the North American Wii U eShop.

(Note: I'm aware in mentioning XSEED that I'm plugging the Ys series - and some of Nihon Falcom's other titles which XSEED currently publishes. I'm a fan of the series - I mean, my Miiverse profile says "Wanderer From Ys", which is a slight alteration of the title of Ys III: Wanderers From Ys, which is the game which was remade into Ys: The Oath In Felgahana for PC/PSP/PSP-on-PSVita.)

Hub page for Pandora's Tower: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/ZQr46UHRBtBkrTPIAoWr2QEhhyLg59J6

Side-note: NoA's game hub pages have intermittently been going up and down in the past two weeks (dropping hub pages for the last two weeks of VC titles), so the Pandora's Tower hub page might intermittently give a 404 error message until it's 'officially' announced tommorow in the press release (or if XSEED confirms it themselves on their social media pages).

Apologies for double-posting first of all.

This week (August 20th 2015) sees the tradeoff-between-regions continue onard, this time with an actual Virtual Console game, and not a Wii legacy. (In the future I'll post my findings for those in the Wii Downloads thread if any more 'Wii legacies' get released in North America).

The trade-off VC game which comes to the eShop this week (tommorow, August 20th 2015) is Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, originally for the Gameboy Advance. This got released on the European VC in July 2015, and Japan got the Game Boy Advance Wars 1+2 edition in April 2014 (as a launch title for the GBA on Wii U Virtual Console). The version of the two games which got released in Japan is a compilation title which consists of Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2, since Nintendo didn't release either Advance Wars game on the GBA in Japan until November 2004.

EDIT: There now also appears to be an entry for the Koei/Koei Tecmo Super NES strategy RPG Genghis Khan II: Clan of The Gray Wolf (which was re-released on the Wii VC in June 2009), making for two Virtual Console releases this week (Advance Wars 2 and Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf).

NoA hub link for Advance Wars 2: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/U9JMQFTlLDIv5ShAUEl76VWLQcPiOu1c
NoA hub link for Genghis Khan II: Clan of The Gray Wolf (listed as Genghis Khan II: Clan of The Grey Wolf): http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/amG9Z74ES6oMoKsPJtklo5h0LXhxvaVS
Hub page might appear/disappear, or there might be other games coming tommorrow (though I'm not so sure) - this has happened before, so this is a bit of a disclaimer.

Further, per Sega and eShop listings on the 3DS, the 3D Classics version of Gunstar Heroes is scheduled for release tomorrow as well.

Source: Nintendo of America's Wii U games hub page, unclick 'Available Now'

Fun fact now that Genghis Khan II is out: Tecmo Koei has now officially brought over every one of their SNES games from the Wii VC to the Wii U VC in North America and Japan. (Europe didn't get any of them but they did get the Wii U VC versions as imports). Therefore another company gets checked off the list. Now if only Square Enix is next...

What if they work on their N64 games first?

It appears that North America is getting Sin & Punishment for the N64 Wii U VC tommorow(August 26th 2015) as an import release. This release was a given, considering that there was an ESRB re-rating given for it (and the sequel for the Wii) earlier this week. We're also getting a Wii legacy re-release of Sin & Punishment: Star Successor tommorow as well. So one N64 VC game and a Wii legacy/Wii Download this week.

Further, the teased re-release of Vs. Excitebike, mentioned on the NoA twitter feed (and an NoA Miiverse post by verified-user 'Amy'), might come either next week or later this week. It's anyone's guess at this point.

What on earth why is Sin and Punishment $11.99? I know it's an import but I thought they stopped the inflated pricing for Imports a long time ago. It better be worth it when I check it out tomorrow for the first time ever...

Resident Evil 4 wii edition drops on the EU E-shop Thursday with a 25% discount https://twitter.com/NintendoEurope/status/657542168790355968

Not a VC game, it's a retail download and will likely go in that thread instead. Though it does make me hope for RE2 N64 for VC...

We started with Wii games here for a reason, they are sparse and ever since the site change supporting a single thread is tricky enough, the community has really quieted down. Also it's legacy software from a previous console, that's my justification in putting it here

The thing is they have none of the VC features that the other systems do. No Restore Points, no special menus, no custom controls, just a straight download of the game with a link to a PDF file of the digital manuals. Heck, they don't even have pro controller support for some reason despite adding in Gamepad support to the Wii Retail Download versions. In my eyes, (and the eyes of the picky Virtual Console Wikipedia page moderators) the Wii Retail Download games are no different than buying a 2012 Wii U Game off of the eShop, in that it's just a digital version of a retail title with no extra bonuses whatsoever. Until Nintendo officially labels the Wii Games as Virtual Console titles worldwide, I'll still refer to them as retail downloads as that is what they are called.

You know, now that we have Pokémon Blue/Red/Green (JP) and Yellow on the 3DS VC, I wonder if there's a chance we can get the Pokémon Stadium games on Wii U VC.

Honestly I'm not sure. It probably can't have support with the 3DS VC versions of Pokemon Gen I due to the transfer pak being more tricky to work with, but they could release it with the rental pokemon, since unlike Battle Revolution and the main games you CAN complete Pokemon Stadium 1, 2 and GS with the rentals, it's just a bit harder.

And of course we have those fun mini games that could be enjoyed too. It doesn't seem as unlikely as getting BW2 on the DS Wii U VC at least!

After two straight weeks of GBA ports which were admittently 'fillers' (Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX and Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival - the latter was a 'wasted-opportunity filler', since Capcom apparently didn't fix the Akuma glitch for the North American VC re-release), a new Wii U VC game is aparently coming tomorrow (Nov. 26th 2015) to North America.
This week's Wii U VC release is Konami's Mario Kart clone for the GBA, entitled Konami Krazy Racers. It was initally released in North America in June 2001, and was re-released on the Wii U VC about a month ago in Europe (October 15 2015).
NoA hub page for Konami Krazy Racers is here: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/7sEHVl55OEF-3xF7p9zFAihnW1WJkRgq

I grew up with this game. Not only is it better than Mario Kart GBA, it was a launch title too! Out of all games from the GBA, I didn't expect this one to get a rerelease.

Really hope we get more N64 games soon, would love Mario Party 3... or if Mario Party one actually got re-released for once!

So considering that Super Star Wars came out on the Playstation 4 recently, Lucasarts is gone, yet Disney Interactive is a Nintendo supporter, think we'll see VC games from them, or is that pretty much a no chance/still to the Wii's versions scenario now?

Also, I had hoped the appearance of Cloud in Smash Bros would have sparked some Square-Enix VC support.

I doubt it. They put games on the PSN but never on the Wii VC, so I don't expect licensed games to be coming to the Wii U VC. There's no benefit for them.

If you're referring to Disney, that's true.

Lucasarts, however, did put out the three Super Star Wars games and Indiana Jones, and Konami put out the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All for the original Wii.

They happen, just not very often.

Maybe by they time Cloud comes out we could see some Square Enix VC games, though it is weird how when Pac-Man was announced, we had Pac-Land and Pac-Man Collection released at the same time, but no Final Fantasy when Cloud was announced.

Yeah, that's a lot of missing games. Not to mention Super Mario RPG, Dragon Warrior/Quest, Kingdom Hearts GBA and DS, Chrono Trigger, Space Invaders Extreme....

There's a lot of untapped potential.

Well you were kinda right... Squaresoft is releasing FFVI Advance in Japan next week, just a week after Cloud become SSB DLC. I doubt we'll get it on our shores, sadly, since it seems Squaresoft has no interest in the VC in the west. I've been waiting for them to bring Secret of Mana to the NA VC since 2013 and still no luck. Sad

Hmm, wasn't sure if this merited a thread, and this seemed like the best place to put it since it's kinda VC/legacy game related.
So what's up is that Microsoft Studios has actually said on Twitter that Wii-u owners could actually request a wii-u version of Rare Replay https://twitter.com/MSStudiosBlog/status/673878677885616128

So, well we either can bug their twitter, or someone put together a petition https://www.change.org/p/phil-spencer-bring-rare-replay-to-nintendo-wii-u-console
Honestly, things seem to be interesting between Nintendo and Microsoft lately, almost as they realize they're in it together rather than fully competing(especially since Nintendo's viewpoint is to bring a unique experience, not directly compete). Could this or RARE games on VC happen? possibly, especially with the recent announcement of Minecraft U... personally I think it combined with Banjo-Kazooie in Smash could happen(or at least if they got in the B-K games would come either to VC, or in a collection.)

This week (December 17th 2015), North America gets three Virtual Console games for the Wii U: Megaman Zero 4 (GBA), Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Protoman (GBA) and Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Colonel (GBA). These games were released on the Wii U VC in Europe earlier this year.

NoA hub pages are here:
Megaman Zero 4(GBA): http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/ZCPIcL7rmh3KJaYq3rMqe9JyU-bHDiGs
Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Protoman(GBA): http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/b5C4mg_gGGtK-yBTYnm3_rM2UqDf_o5L
Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Colonel(GBA): http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/NqpkuSG6xUiJVljcpAlsqVicVBcFZzga
Source: NoA hub page; unclick 'Available Now'

I partly expected there to be Megaman Virtual Console games for the VC this week, due to the franchise's 28th anniversary on either Thursday or Friday, combined with the fact that we got the first Megaman Zero game last year at the same time (the week of the 27th anniversary of the Megaman franchise).

Incidentally, the regional tradeoff system is indeed at play this week. Europe is apparently getting Mario Tennis 64, New Super Mario Bros. and Ominusha Tactics for their Wii U Virtual Console library. All three of these games were re-released as Virtual Console games earlier this year in North America, and we're getting three of the Megaman games which were released in Europe earlier this year.

Definitely a catch-up week. Not really interested in any of the 3 Mega Man games, but it means we're 3 games closer caught up.

REALLY want some good 1st Party VC games next week. Christmas-time week is usually filled with so,e pretty good games, right?

Personally, I'd love some more N64 games, especially if we could start getting some third party ones

1080 Snowboarding, Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 were confirmed for the Japanese eShop a while ago, so we could very likely get one of those three shortly. MK64 will be very interesting as it'll show us whether the Wii U VC will have Controller Pak support or not, which is needed to have third party N64 games hit to the service
