Next tweaks for the site

Here it is, your chance to chat, bitch and moan, etc. about what you like, want, or hate about the current site.

We're looking at making some tweaks to the site, since it's been about two years since GN relaunched, and 2.5 since GS (going sony) first launched with our custom software, and though we still have new features to work on, some of the existing things could be better.

That's where you come in. Tell us what you like or don't, and be specific damnit. Saying "make it cooler" or "that flat thing should be less grey". Huh? Exactly.

Extra points for mockups (vs vague text descriptions).

Current ideas being tossed around:

  • Remove large/wide banner in favor of a smaller and more compact header area for the desktop version
  • (more like the tablet layout; drag your window narrower to see it)
  • More mobile-first UI; right now things are mostly just scaled and re-flowed from the desktop version. This could mean bigger, clickable buttons for mobile devices, etc.
  • Re-introduce a more traditional forum layout; if the blog style is really not so conducive to discussion

Anyone with experience making mobile apps should get in touch privately if you'd like to be part of such a project.

On older versions of GN, there used to be a listing of "Top Stories" always visible on the left side (or was it on the right side?).
I really miss that, I always thought this was really useful. You typed in gonintendo.com, and boom, you saw immediately if there has been huge news bombs since my last visit on the site. Today, you have to click on a link, and have to scroll quite a bit.through the page.
I would love to see that return!

1. I like to quickly refresh the site during the day on my phone when I have a quiet moment but I find the 'GoNnintendo' home / header pretty small and it takes a few presses to get it to respond. A bigger home button on mobile would be great.

2. I only just found that the forums excited after using the site since September - seems like quite a few peeps on there would like them to be more visible and my experience seems to back this up.

3. So far I've been reading and posting on specific stories. However, the site moves so quickly - i.e. is updated with so many stories - that I find the conversation runs out as the stories are pushed down pretty quickly. I sometimes have to click back 3 or 4 pages to see if a conversation is still active - and often it's not. Love the site and love the amount of activity don't get me wrong - but maybe theres a way of keeping active stories visible on the first page?

Really good work going on here though - I'm returning to gaming after a long break and it's been great to find a site with a tone as constructive and interesting as this.

Cort: his #1 is probably due to us using a narrower than default title bar. I've had this problem too as I think phone browsers have a very small "dead zone" between the URL bar and the page content.

Are we talking about the black bar at the top that says "GoNintendo" and then the three lines in the upper-right corner?

If so, no worries. The entire menu/header thingy for mobile will be getting redone.

The official numbers are in: 60% of our traffic comes from mobile devices. That means we need to take a real look at putting the mobile experience first, instead of modifying a desktop experience to sorta work.

My only issue is that it would be nice if the forums returned back to how they previously were. It was MUCH easier to navigate and see new content before the site crash/update rolled out. I see you are already looking into this though!

Also fan banners making a comeback is awesome! Can't wait for that! ^_^

Can we get back the ability to use greater than, less than, and ampersand symbols in PMs?

I have a feeling this is a simple fix on the back-end.

That's a bug and should be fixed now.

Ampersand and greater than work now, thanks.

Less than, not so much.

Can you provide an example where it's not working? I think the HTML scrubber I have set up is being too grabby.

"Can you provide an example where it's not working?"

If I include a less than sign in a PM, it does not appear.

Not only that, but everything written after it disappears.

So if I I try to write a PM that looks like this:

Blah blah blah blah blah
X < Y
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

It winds up looking like this:

Blah blah blah blah blah
X

So far, I've managed to reproduce the bug with the following patterns:

[quote]
aaaaa

Wow, I just triggered the same bug in comments... I'll see what I can do @_@

Okay, this is what ">_<" followed by a paragraph of text looks like in PM.

This is what the Kirby dance looks like after being sent, note the lack of <('-'<)s or <(' - ')>s

I also sent a PM yesterday after the >& fix where I included a shifty eyes <.< as a test after signing my name.

When using the preview button, things show up fine.

The actual posts are where things go pear-shaped:

Alright I think I got it fixed now. Sorry for the trouble.

Protip: Sanitizing user input is "hard"

"Protip: Sanitizing user input is "hard""

I can offer a few comments, both relating to the mobile site:

1. One thing that's a big irritating is attempting to click a headline or button to expand an article right as the banner ad loads and pushes down the entire page. I'm not sure if it can be relocated or implemented in a way that doesn't disrupt the page.

2. I'm not sure if this is user error, but the buttons for expanding/minimizing an article don't seem to consistently activate when tapping them. Sometimes it's just a delay, and other times it seems to not register at all even after several widely-spaced attempts.

Excited to see what you guys do next! Thanks for your hard work Smile

EDIT: Remember how you had a special news alert (or whatever it is called) the other day reminding people about how to filter content for BotW? Could you do that, but for this thread to increase visibility/awareness? I'm sure a lot of users have thoughts, but won't ever be aware of this thread due to the apparent difficulty in finding the forums.

Random Thoughts:

Google chrome plugin that lets you view recent stories.

I honestly have no idea if this is possible, but could we get a feature that lets you view all new stories since the last time you visited the site?

How about a feature that lets you choose how many posts to view per page?

Can we add timestamps to posts? As RMC is on the EST, that would work.

I said this in the other thread, but can you move the sidebar titled: Recent comments, to under the header like it was in GN...V3 I think it was?

Remove large/wide banner in favor of a smaller and more compact header area for the desktop version

Personally against this idea, but if it works well for other users, than I'd support it.
More mobile-first UI; right now things are mostly just scaled and re-flowed from the desktop version. This could mean bigger, clickable buttons for mobile devices, etc.

Hmm, I would prefer you keep the website as a desktop first site, but if a majority of your traffic comes mobile like you said above, I guess it would make sense to do it the other way. I'm getting the feeling that you might be attempting to put together an app. If so, maybe keep the site as desktop first as mobile users would have the app?
Re-introduce a more traditional forum layout; if the blog style is really not so conducive to discussion

YES PLEASE! I really liked how the forums used to be, in terms of maneuverability, the ability to see threads with new posts since your last one, the ability to only at threads that you had commented on, sort by active posts, etc.

Also, I think this is already on your To-Do list, but a more fledged "ranking" system. Although rather than ranks, I liked how it was based on Nintendo IPs. "Apprentice" just doesn't have the same ring as "Shyguy".

Thank you for all these!

Just wanted to say, we don't have any client or device-specific technologies in the works, though I'm open to them if you know anyone who develops for those. The "Recent Stories" is the default for the site, btw.

Been thinking of something like the "since last visit", kinda like the forums used to have. Someone once suggested a "pause" button, partially for what you're thinking, but also to limit the pagination changing while browsing backward (you know, like you're on page 3, but when you get to page 4, RMC has posted two more stories, so now page 4 has two stories you just saw, and you've gotta go all the way back to the index to get caught up). Anywho...

Modifying a timestamp is easy enough.

I do have some work to do on the ranks; though I don't see it as a Nintendo-only ladder like we used to.

Sadly, when it comes to devices, desktop is now the minority, and shrinking every month. I guess my point is that it's easier to extrapolate a desktop experience from a streamlined mobile-first idea than shoehorning everything you can do on a desktop screen into a handheld.

I do have some work to do on the ranks; though I don't see it as a Nintendo-only ladder like we used to.

Specifically this is due to ranks being shared between the two sites, though I could rig it up so they are separate. However that would take a little work.

I didn't know how to say this, but I would be in favor of it as well.

Y'all can "think about it" all you want. Just remember who has to actually build it :P

Hah, I have faith in you!

Honestly, perhaps even putting a number bubble next to each category to show how many new posts there are might be enough (Latest News (6)) (Top Stories (1))

But yes, it's all just speculation and imagination at this point. Would need to discuss it internally before starting on making anything a reality.

Maybe not the place, but whoever made the new banner, it looks very nice!

OFFTOPICSS???!

Banner is courtesy of the brilliant VoodooThursday

Would it be possible to give us the option to pick which site banner we want to use?

Maybe make it so that it updates whenever a new one is added for exposure, but we have the option to return to an old one?

I totally get the appeal of what you're asking for, and to T27, it probably sounds like something I'd dream up, but I'd have to say this is something I'd put on a back burner for inclusion, if ever. The main reason is that the banner area is our personal branding/ad space, meaning we get to advertise whatever we want. Usually that is our own site with the normal banner, but other times we want to promote something else. If users were able to just turn that off, it would no longer be our space nor promotional how we intend. Imagine if someone sponsored that area by making their own banner (this has actually happened before), but users just picked something else...it would put us in an awkward position of not fulfilling our end of the deal.

Anyway...I guess I could be in favor of something like a "retro fan banner" weekend here and there where the community votes and chooses which previous banner to have up for a moment.

Then again, if we ever offer a subscription-type service that allows certain tiers the ability to disable ads, who knows if we could also offer such a feature...

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the feedback!
