Well, here we go. The first bit of official Switch successor news in a VERY long time, and it comes straight from Nintendo’s president.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the Switch successor is going to be the focus of an announcement sometime within this fiscal year. The current fiscal year is now up-and-running, and it’s set to end by March 2025. In other words, sometime between now and March 2025, we’ll have official details about the hardware that comes after Switch.

Mr. Furukawa didn’t share any details on what this system would be, nor did we get specifics on when to expect the announcement. We’ll just have to keep fingers and toes crossed that it’s coming soon!

While 'insiders' have been telling us each year that Switch 2 would release 'this year', I've been saying it all along:

Announce in Sep. 2024 and release in March '25.

So release could be late in the year 25. That's good. I'll still have about 1,5 year to clear up my backlog on my Wii U and 3DS. It exists of the best games ever made (that is if you trust the reviews.. I'll trust them in this case;)

Keep one thing in mind about this.

While Nintendo has made it official that the successor is going to be announced, they didn't say whether its a revision or a brand new console.

And when you think about it, making a brand new console with exclusive games released for that console would not drive sales in the same level easily considering the Switch has a massive library compared to the successor. Not saying that it won't happen but considering that Nintendo expects the Switch to outsell the DS, its pretty likely that the successor would just be something like Dsi where you don't get a lot of exclusives but you still get to enjoy the switch line up.

Pretty confident that this would be the scenario.

And the rest of us are pretty confident you're are wrong. They have only ever said successor when referring to their next generation system. DS to DSi was barely an iterative update to the same system. It's only exclusives were purely from the near worthless shop they added and possibly a single retail game that made use of the camera. It otherwise was the same exact syatem (with slightly more RAM to accommodate the new UI and shop, but I digress).

Unless you want to argue having the same general form factor will make you right, as it will still be a dockable handheld, then be my guest. But this will be a new system with a jump akin to DS to 3DS: Same form factor and backwards compatible, but a significant upgrade in hardware and features.

@socar

I think we've already seen this with the OLED. It's pretty clear that they've been slowing down on games for the current system, so I don't think a revision is too likely. Would be interesting to see what they come up with if they go down this route though!

I can't wat to see the new hardware, software, and ideas that will make this upcoming generation stand out.
