The one surefire way to get someone to do something is to tell them they can’t do. That’s exactly what happened when Nintendo told Wii U and 3DS fans that online servers were going to shut down for those platforms come April 8th, 2024. Pretty much everyone took this as a call get some online gaming in before the online plug was pulled, but a few VERY dedicated gamers are still out there mixing it up online.

Despite Wii U and 3DS online servers being sunset on April 8th, 2024, there are still a handful of players who are keeping the online experience going to this very moment. This group is calling themselves the “Crazy 8,” and they’re still online playing games like Pokémon X and Y, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

With servers being killed nearly one month ago, the Crazy 8 have been sticking around online long enough to secure a new record for themselves. The previous record-holders for keeping an online game going after server shutdowns were a dedicated group of Halo 2 players. Those first-person fans kept on fragging for a couple weeks after Microsoft shut down the Xbox Live service on the original Xbox, but now the Crazy 8 have surpassed what was achieved by Xbox fans over a decade ago.

So what happens now for the Crazy 8? Well, after losing one member due a disconnect, the push continues! Who knows how long these players will stay on before an internet hiccup or new move from Nintendo pushes them offline. All we know is that they remain dedicated to keeping their online memories alive for as long as possible.

I wonder how this works. I was playing MK8 online as well, but was kicked offline exactly 0:00 hours at the date Nintendo had in mind for this.

I think after a Nintendo server turns you loose to play online or holds a lobby for you and other players, the server has to hold a connection. But since Nintendo doesn't have robust online functions, there's basically no way to kick players in some scenarios so that's what these players are banking on.

For example if a lobby has no timeout kicks in lobbies, players can't be removed until they disconnect themselves, they lose internet, or Nintendo loses internet. Nintendo has a lot of servers though so an isolated few connections may persist until the final end.

I don’t think Nintendo can push them offline.
These online games relied on direct connection between players. The servers were only there to establish the connection and perform matchmaking, but now that they’re gone, these players are just connecting directly together with no intermediate.
