Miyamoto confirms new Mario Bros. game for Wii U at E3, working on smaller projects as well

The following news comes from Spanish newspaper, El Mundo...

"Miyamoto, who smiled during all the interview - even when he wants to change the topic because 'it's not the moment' to talk about Wii U - thinks that the experience and the new game modes of this new console won't be 'easily replicated in other devices', which will allow them to escape the new tablet competition. The creator advances that at the next E3, the biggest video games show, which is celebrated in Los Angeles in June, Nintendo will present a new Super Mario for this platform, in which you will combine the TV screen with the screen in the controller."
Believe it or not, Nintendo actually confirmed this news!

"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," a Nintendo spokesperson said. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."

Miyamoto also confirmed that he's working on a number of projects, including Pikmin 3 and Luigi's Mansion 2.

"I'm working on several projects but I think that I cannot talk about them all [laughs]. Some are small but important projects for Wii U. Also on a new Pikmin, which will take advantage of the new HD screen resolution, and on Luigi's Mansion for 3DS."

Thanks to all that sent this in!

Well, they say a new "Super Mario BROS" for Wii U... Galaxy and Sunshine and such are not (by title) Super Mario Bros. games, but Super Mario games... so either Nintendo misquoted, or hmmm, we might get a 3D version of Super Mario Bros. style gameplay.

And oh man, Pikmin 3, I wonder how it will look (and of course play) like!

E3 HYPE!!! Less than 2 months remaining

I'm getting tired of too much Mario-games...
Sorry, but Nintendo should take theri time and make something big like Galaxy. The Innovation push from Sunshine to Galaxy was gigantic.

Super Mario Bros. Mii? Please not. If it's going to be a 2D Mario, I would rather want a 2D Mario like World and not a NSMBWii 2...

NEW MARIO GAME AT E3?! DANG, THAT'S FAST! What terrific news! I can't wait! This looks to avoid the "no first party Mario at 3DS announcement" issue. Thank you Nintendo! I cannot wait to see the first HD, high-powered Super Mario Brothers title!

Also, with a 2D Mario confirmed for 3DS and now a second Super Mario confirmed for Wii-U that's (obviously) ready to be shown off, one of them is bound to be Super Mario Brothers 4. I knew Nintendo wouldn't just grab that for no reason! I promise you Super Mario 4 will land on Wii-U to make good on their "returning to the hardcore" stuff they've been talking about with the Wii-U.

(Was it not also confirmed that "New Super Mario Brothers Mii" was never a real game being made? I was pretty sure that's what they said. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

I hope it's not the game from last year.

I can't be the only one that thinks Miis in a proper Mario adventure game just looks garish and out of place.

Super Mario Bros., as in a 2D platformer, or "Super Mario" as in a 3D platformer?

It makes a big difference as to whether I'll be excited for it or not. I couldn't care less about a New Super Mario Bros. at this point.

PIKMINNNN 3! He actually confirmed it is now for Wii U. And exists.

Happy days!

@Jingleboy

Already was confirmed for Wii U quite some time =P But I'm glad you're excited anyway :P

It'll be nice if they do more with the many, many unused characters that are playing baseball, tennis, racing in karts, and playing party games.

Miyamoto said it is a Super Mario game and then Nintendo says it is a Super Mario Bros. game. 2D or 3D?

maybe 3D on the television and 2D on the controller? Maybe like Super Paper Mario?.. o_o

1) I hope it's not just NSMBMii from last year [AKA I prefer 3D Mario's].

2) Needs to be a launch title [even if Pikmin 3 is ready for it too, I personally don't care about this cannibalizing its initial sales]!

Super Mario 4

Perhaps SM4 will be New Super Mario Bros. Mii on both Wii U and 3DS. We saw NSMBMii as a tech demo for Wii U, and we have been told that a 2D Mario game is in development for the 3DS. They could be the exact same game. Imagine Super Mario 4 on the Nintendo Network’s eShop, available for download onto the Wii U and/or the 3DS. People could play the same game together on both the Wii U and the 3DS across the consoles.

More Mario is never a bad thing. But if it's the 'New' Super Mario Bros. series? Meh. The DS and Wii games were fun but I can't say I am in the need to play a new one at least for now.

But that new Pikmin game is something I really like to see soon (E3, please). 8)

Make a new Mario game like Sunshine and 64. I want no more of this boring linearity crap from these Galaxy and 3D Land games. I want back my freedom to explore!

A Mario game would do great for the sales. However, I wonder miyamoto is talking about a 3D or a 2D Mario. Considering Iwata revelead a 2D Mario is being developed for 3DS and that EAD Tokyo has two teams, it is reasonable to expect this is a 3D Mario developed by the crew behind Super Mario Galaxy 2. I hope I am right, as I think a 2D Mario would sell great but do little to convince HD console owners to buy a Wii U.

Why not both a 2D Mario and a 3D Mario? It's not like we haven't had an E3 where that's happened before. However I wouldn't expect a 3D Mario at launch, it seems way too soon for that after SM3DL, a 2D NSMB game at launch would make much more sense for Nintendo.

Most importantly, is the next game geared toward the fans or made just for the money?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (fans)

Super Mario All-Stars (money)

Okay I'm the mariomaniac but Mario is starting to turn into COD (as in yearly release not a creative standpoint). I mean i'm cool with this but...i'd be lying if I said i'd much rather see DK, Starfox, or F-Zero at launch instead but this should do great for Wii U sales wise.

I just hope it's a 3D Mario and not that NSMBM tech-demo turned into a real game from last E3, especially since a new 2D Mario is also heading to the 3DS this year.

I'd be up for either a 2D or 3D Mario game.

First off, I don't understand the flack that NSMB gets around here. I think it is a great series that brings back core Mario gameplay wrapped in brand new packages. The Wii version was perfectly challenging in later levels and playing it with my girlfriend and our friends has always been an excellent experience.

That said, I usually get more hyped up for the 3D Mario games, with Galaxy 2 and 3D Land being two of my favorite games of all time.

Looking past personal preferences, though (as I would be happy with either a 2D or 3D platformer), I think it would be a wiser decision to focus on a 2D Mario for Wii U. That's obviously not what the majority around here want, but 2D Mario games push systems. I want the Wii U to get off to a great start, and 2D Mario would be a huge difference maker. Just look at what NSMB DS and Wii did in sales compared to Galaxy 1 and 2. While most 'core' Nintendo gamers around here want a 3D Mario game, the mass audience seems to prefer 2D Mario platformers.

So...if it was my pick, I would probably say that I'd rather see the next chapter in the 3D Mario series. But, if I were to go by what would be best for Wii U, I think it should be 2D.

(If it's NSMB Mii, though, they better have some better tricks up their sleeves other than just being able to play as Miis. I don't want Mii characters in my Mario game. I want more MARIO characters.)

Day one for me ! A sequel to Galaxy 2 or a new Yoshi game is perfect for me :)

With the way they've been pumping out Mario games recently, I'm not surprised one bit. I guess if they're willing to show the game at this point, it'll probably be done in time for the launch.

16 Apr 2012 16:51

Well, this is unexpected, especially since we've just recently been hearing about a new 3DS game. I'm guessing this one's gonna have 3D gameplay since the 3DS one is known to be 2D. I wonder which one will be released first...
Hopefully this is something new. Recent Mario games have been good as always, but they've started getting a little stale. I want this game and the 3DS one to shake everything up like Galaxy did.

A new Mario game on the Wii U? Who would have guessed that one? :P

On a more serious note, I hope this new game will be similar to World with its huge map to explore with branching paths and all the other great things that the game included. Either that or revisit Peaches castle, but with a lot of different things to do around it as well. Maybe even make a city around it or something.

Seems this is just NSMBMii after all guys:

Update: Nintendo has responded. "In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."
