"I really feel like I'm satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it's the best for this generation. What we're thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld." - Shigeru Miyamoto
Looks like we're going to be hanging onto the current 3DS for some time. Miyamoto didn't have anything to say about revisions, but did admit to pondering ideas for a future generation portable. No worries, that one will be quite some time away.

Apart from battery, needing a 2nd stick & wifi isn't as good as other devices.
I was hoping for a 3DS redesign announcement at E3.
And I'll bet you the next Nintendo handheld swings pretty far in the iPhone direction... Cheaper downloadable games and more media functions.
I'll be really happy when they release an XL version of the 3DS. No need for a second slide pad though if they can make it work without ruining the design of our beloved 3DS it will be fine.
So: Bigger screens with preferably a higher res, better contrast ratio and upscaling (wishful thinking eh? :p) and at least a 70% increasement of battery life.
That's all I want from a revision. 2nd Slidepad only a plus.
This is good to hear. Thanks Nintendo.
3DS is perfectly comfortable for me, I even enjoyed Kid Icarus Uprising's controls.
that's too bad. i'd like a model with bigger screens, no raised ridges on bottom, more responsive physical buttons to replace the membrane keys (the old rubber nibs were great), better battery, and built in second pad. maybe Nintendo is just waiting for prices to drop on a certain type/size battery they want, waiting to renegotiate prices for the overpriced 3D film layer screens and for assembly, etc. They might be locked into contracts for a while. Better speakers would be nice too. and it would be amazing to have oled. The vita screen looks beautiful.
I think I'd rather have a redesign, unless they have something truly new in store for the next system. There is a lot of room for improvement in the current design, in my opinion. The processing speed, on the other hand, is sufficient.
On the one hand, sad to hear. There's still so many things wrong with the 3DS that just...don't need to be there to begin with, that it's mindblowing that Nintendo is a-okay with them and thinks of the 3DS as its final form in any way. Ergonomics are kinda off, the bottom ridges and buttons shouldn't press on the top the much they do, stylus placement is horrible, screen brightness should be alterable during play again, the Start/Select/Home buttons need to be...buttons again, the hinge could lock into place firmer, the headphone port placement makes no sense for use as portable music player and the 3DS doesn't exactly like being a portable to begin with, with its glossy lid that doesn't even completely seal off the bottom part, leaving gaps for all kinds of dirt. A lot of little things that don't even make me start about more crucial changes like battery life, the bottom screen's size, another analog stick or weight reducement.
On the other I kinda agree with subtle voices welcoming Nintendo's next whole handheld generation earlier than originally necessary. Beginning with the whole region-lock blunder, I just can't see myself ever embracing the 3DS like I did the DS family. And it only gets more depressing glancing at Sony f*cking up a lot with the Vita on the other side of the road... Ugh. I want to go back to the glorious age of DS-PSP dual wielding...
Ninety next console will be all about the haptic stuff like the rumors of the nintendo Feel this time.
Yeah yeah yeah....no redesign....sure....just like how you denied the GBA redesign right until the day before it was announced.
Nintendo made a mint re-releasing the DS three additional times. They'll sure as hell try that again with the 3DS.
Is he really satisfied with a system that can scratch its own screen just by closing it?
The only redesign I want is a smaller one. I freakin' loved the game boy micro
clearly the 3ds xl is not a redesign , it's just bigger and use the empty space to add the analog . and better camera please ! .
I think that Miyamoto has lost touch with reality. Too many "Yes Men" perhaps.
It's far from perfect. It's bulky-the whole thing could be the size of the bottom half of the one we have now, it needs a second analog stick, the three-layered design is awful. It leaves marks on the top screen from where it was designed badly and from the circle pad and the area below the touch screen can be reduced. A revision could also make the top screen bigger to fill out the system more and the battery life needs to be fixed. 3DS+ next E3, please. Much sooner would be shooting themselves in the foot.
Guess it's safe to get a Circle Pad Pro, will probably pick up the Nyko one that works with the Nyko battery when it comes out.
Good, I won't have to be jealous of shinier, newer 3DSes like with the DS.
I dunno what all this fuss about needing another analog stick is about. Guess I just haven't play a game that needed one yet.
I can't imagine what they'd do after the 3DS... Would it still even be in 3D, I wonder?
Did they ever fix the pixelation problem when you're playing DS games yet? I still have like 50 or 60 DS games I need to finish.
Really? You mean the poor battery life, crappy start/select/home buttons, kinda flimsy 3D slider, tacky-looking layer-cake design, loose hinge, small and sharp-edged D-pad, and lack of any comfortable pointing mechanism are all just wonderful? The system's got some good things going for it, but come on, it's not ideal by a long shot.
As a side note, I don't get why Miyamoto keeps talking about using the gyro for camera control when head-tracking with the inward-facing camera could work better and wouldn't depend on holding the system in a specific orientation.
i dont have a problem with the main buttons really, is not like games even ask to press select. Honestly if we are gonna get nitpicky, nothing will ever satisfy us. Honestly, was there any "perfect" portable ?Pick one and i will tear it apart in 10 paragraphs. However overall, the 3ds is strong with the only issue being the battery and thats easily solved with the 3rd party offers.
Do you mean the fact that it's all blurry in full screen? No, and they won't/can't fix it, it's an unavoidable result of the resolutions being so different. If you hold start or select when starting up a DS game, the system will use the game's natural resolution, but as the pixels on a 3DS are smaller than any DS model, the screen will be tiny (again, unavoidable). The only way they could fix this would be to increase the 3DS' resolution to 640 (1280) x 384, so there are four pixels for every one on the original DS.
Basically, the best way to play your DS games is on an original DS system (DSi and XL included).
Damn it Nintendo! Now I don't know if I'll buy one or wait for a redesign! If I buy one now there might be one just around the corner. Xo
yeah right, just like they were happy with the design of the DS? LOL
DS phat, DS lite, DSi, DSi XL
redesigned 3DS IS IN THE WORKS
This is just one of the problems with modern technology. I'd been holding out on getting a MacBook for ages because of everyone saying they were overdue introducing a new one, so I finally snapped last October. As you may know, new MacBooks were unveiled this week, (luckily(?), I got the base 13 inch model which is basically unchanged aside from a newer graphics card). I don't regret jumping the gun one bit though, because I've had 8 months use out of it which I woudn't have had otherwise. Same goes for my iPod classic (I swear I'm not an Apple fanboy), those must be due some kind of upgrade, but as it stands I've already had a lot of mileage out of it which I'd have completely missed out on otherwise.
Point is, if there are enough games you want to play on the system, just go for it. Maybe they will announce a redesign next month, but you'll still have a 3DS with a load of games you want to play on it. And if you keep waiting for a redesign you might be waiting for anything from months to years. Sure, early adopters get stung sometimes, and it is often worth waiting for a price drop on new stuff, but really just go for it. There's nothing stopping you trading your old system in if they do announce a must-have redesign anyway, the 3DS' system transfer is pretty comprehensive.
I need a 3DS redesign becuse my 3DS keeps on crashing
