This supposedly comes from an inside source that is familiar with what's holding the game back.
- The Sky Runner song needs to be changed
- The Chuck Berry battle song needs to be changed
- The Dali’s Clock enemy name needs to be changed
The big issue here is the Sky Runner song. The fixes with the other two issues are no big deal, but the Sky Runner change is apparently enough to put NoA or NCL off the VC release. Seems like a pretty big downer to me. Thanks to Wallid for the heads up.

Consider this: the Mother games aren't even on the Virtual Console in JAPAN. If Japan, the country that originally got all three, doesn't have any of them, then what hope do we have? (Oh and that Brawl demo meant nothing, because 4 years later and, like I said, it's not even on the Japanese VC)
@nGen The clock of Dali is his property, and his relatives can complain if they use it.
Anyway, it's still a big problem.
Nintendo is idiotic for not telling us what's up. Why do they have to be so secretive?
And Itoi is an idiot for apparently preferring his game to stay in obscurity and $100+ price range (not to mention that the majority of carts sold are fake) rather than alter a few extremely minor things. Ugh.
I'm thinking I'm never going to buy and play a legit version of EarthBound. I'm starting to feel the same way about Grim Fandango.
It's a downer but it's doable! What's the issue?
The experience itself far outclasses whatever kind of song I hear over an incidental music interlude! I'm not gonna cry myself to sleep if Sky Runner doesn't sound like Sky Runner!
@Storm101 By telling you, you spread the word and the ones with the properties may learn about it and demand Nintendo right away.
He prefers his games to be like that, he's the creator and does what he wants.
-Sky Runner song:
There's a lot of iconic music in EarthBound, but this isn't really a standout. If the original game had just replaced this with the Runaway Five theme or something, nobody would've batted an eyelash.
-Chuck Berry song
Google tells me this is referring to the New Age Retro Hippie theme. Frankly, I'm calling bulls*** on this. "K.K. Rockin." from Animal Crsossing is just as bad, but nobody at Nintendo has ever cared; hell, that song even made it into BRAWL, while the NARH theme got cut. Even still, the song only shows up in a couple places in EarthBound, so it would be an easy fix.
-Dali's Clock
I know Dali's estate is really strict with this copyright stuff. But Dali's Clock only shows up in one area of the game (as far as I know). They could dummy it out entirely and it wouldn't be a big deal.
What really surprises me is that there aren't more issues than this. If these really are the only problems with the game, then that makes the whole situation even sadder. Especially considering the rumor that it's been NCL (or Itoi) that won't allow NOA to make the necessary changes. I know Itoi doesn't seem like that kind of smug self-righteous artist (he even went as far to say he'd be okay with someone else making a Mother 4).
I don't know if they're willing to bother anymore, but Starmen.net should do another write-in campaign, specifically telling NCL and Itoi that these basic changes are completely and totally acceptable.
That's true.
However, the Dali's Clock looks nothing like the clocks from The Persistance of Memory. Just change the name to melting clock and be done with it.
And why is it such a huge deal that music artists for this game were inspired/ripped off popular songs. Will.I.Am seems to get away with it every time he releases an album.
I'm happy that people are being more informed and not just crapping all over NOA. It's not their call....it's clearly NCL's call. We can pick on NOA for many, many things. But not this one.
The problem is that NoJ doesn't want any of the source material changed, so sadly, we'll never see it here.
Three teeeeny tiny reasons. Wow. Fix em up already Nintendo
I think it was totally intentional to be Dali's Clock, as far as I know Itoi loves putting references in his Mother games, like the numerous dialogues and visual references of the Beatles. And he's a copywriter, he should know this stuff is totally intentional, I dunno, maybe it was to make the player learn about these other artists that influenced him.
About the huge deal, I can only say that Nintendo is very afraid for being sued. After the many lawsuits they have had (especially the Donkey Kong one...) I can't blame them. If you wanna know more I can put up a link of their lawsuits: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.off ... Id=3146206
psst hey nintendo come here! make a 3DS remake and alter the songs a little, youll be filthy rich once you do.
I always see a lot of people saying this, but never sources.
Don't perpetuate rumors, guys.
What about Nintendo's god awful support of VC? There's thousands of games that don't have legal problems and yet they've only released about a dozen VC games for Wii this year
Without a change, it's lawsuit material basically. That's what NoA is afraid of. I honestly don't see why they can't or won't try to strike a deal with that song holder though.
Only in the music business do you have to pay to advertise someone else.
This is the one VC game that would be an insta-buy for many people. I, like many gamers, have never played Earthbound and am more than willing to fork over my money to experience the Mother games. Maybe someday it'll become a reality.
Nintendo will change music and visuals in Zelda as to not offend Muslims.
Nintendo will remove Kawasaki logos from Wave Race to avoid having to license the name again.
Nintendo will not alter and re-release Earthbound to make fans happy.
It's sad to see where Nintendo's priorities lie.
...Why is it sad? It's clearly a priority for companies to change something that important in order to not get sued.
I'm sure you know this:
And one thing that must be carefully treated are religion-themed matters.
AT LEAST, and I don't care how the most of you guys think it's a better idea to change some details in Earthbound/Mother 2 for Nintendo to "make fans happy" or "make profit out of it", some people in Nintendo want it unchanged and wanted to release it like that.
--
On a second note, it looks a bit like Deja vu, since a similar fate occured to EarthboundZero/Mother 1.
There are some people it is probably not a good idea to offend
Nintendo is a business. Unless you own stock, it really does not owe you (or I) anything.
And if it were trying to prep the game for a release, it would not be in its interest to talk about the negotiations.
Mike from Morgantown
I'm not saying they should talk about the details, I'm saying they should give a simple statement of "No, it's never coming to the Virtual Console" or not. It seems in their best interest seeing how much fan spam they get asking what's up.
Never is a false word, maybe they can release it in the Virtual Console after all, even if it sounds far-fetched to you.
If this is what you meant by Nintendo "owning" an explanation, then I concur. While they don't have to do anything, saying something generally would probably not be a bad idea. And it would show that maybe some of that hubris which has often causes Nintendo problems is no longer there.
