“In some ways I wish it was just a Smash rip-off because people really love Smash, and to have it on a Sony system would be great” - Sony's Seth Killian
Well, that's just playing semantics! We all know the game was inspired by Smash Bros., and it clearly rips a lot on the series. I guess Sony wants to pretend the situation is different.

I think it pretty much got what it deserved.
It rips off the concept of Smash Bros. It actually plays nothing like it.
It's like if Capcom made a Versus game that let you play with four players at once in a free for all battle. People would call that a Smash Bros rip-off, too.
Rips the concepts of Super Smash bros.
Played it this weekend and it plays nothing like Smash Bros. It's similar yes, but not a copy.
+ MoldyClay was right. U guys are missing the point.
Moldyclay quote:
I think he's saying "I wish it was a rip-off" in the sense that it's nowhere near as good. Not even good enough to be considered a rip-off. Not as charming, not as much heart & soul. It's just a rip-off to be a rip-off. It's not Smash Bros. It's a corpse with make-up.
^This is what he meant.
It's a rip-off... A shameless one. The entire concept is taken from Smash Bros.. So they did some minor changes to he gameplay... Big deal. Still a rip off!
@MoldyClay
so it's merely a shameless rip off without any of the spark and freshness of super smash bros. as opposed to being a complete carbon copy ?
Poor Seth Killian. Left Capcom Unity and its torrent of complains about on-disc DLC, Mega Man abandonment, etc to go to Sony to defend Battle Royale with Cheese.
Well, even if it is a rip off(haven't played it), the fact that there aren't a lot of interesting Sony characters. I mean, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Sackboy are all funny character, buy its just not enough. Guys like Nathan Drake are just, well, guys. There's nothing to them. That's probably why they had to find a good amount of third party characters to put in there.
I work at a very busy GameStop in the biggest mall in the Northwest United States... we've sold only like a dozen copies. Right before the game came out, our Sony rep came in and was like, "This is it, guys! Our big blockbuster of the year!" and we all just laughed because we had received only 7 pre-orders between PS3 and Vita combined.
That's exactly the point I got from it.
And sales can't forget those. But yeah, hit the nail on the head with this comment.
@CCFanboy
I'd argue that Kratos, Nathan Drake, Sackboy, and, Ratchet & Clank are "characters of any real recognition." Are they up to Mario, Link, or Pikachu standards? No, but they're pretty up there.
in all honesty. Its not that much of a rip off. On a surface level it really does look like it. But when you play it, you realize it just isnt.. Feels way different.
with that said. Its not a good game. It feels severely unpolished. still animation and mobility; way too much hitstun; and no standard attacks (everything feels like a special attack)
it could be a fun game with the right crowd. But it just falls way below the standard set by the smashbros series
correction...stiff animations and mobility
I wish this game was good, too. The world can't have few enough "good games."
Sony's Seth Killian
Man that is so weird to read.
Had the game for a few days, I'm enjoying it with my friends. If I had to make complaints, anything outside of the actually game kinda sucks, the presentation leaves a whole lot to be desired. IT's charmless. But the core game is fun.
The only thing I really like about it is that it has spike from Ape Escape. Love those games.
Gotta love Seth's honesty. I wish it was a Smash Bros. rip-off too.
Well, that's understandable. I wish I was Smash Bros. rip-off too.
Well, i wish it played and felt a bit more like Smash rather than Mortal Kombat and Jump Superstars mished mashed together.
So what they're saying is less Battle Stadium D.O.N. and more Smash Bros? Wasn't Battle Stadium D.O.N. a Smash Clone?
I won't say it's a smash rip off, but it was clearly heavily inspired by smash. The characters, gameplay, and level design doesn't interest me in the slightest, but I'm sure it's a good game.
That being said, I wish Sony would just say the game is inspired by smash like some of the devs for the game had said rather than beating around the bush like some other statements.
People keep highlighting Drake but no. Uncharted is not mainstream popular. No matter how much sony fanboys want him to be. He isn't Lara Croft. He hasn't sold vitas. Ratchet or sackboy I will give you but people need to wake up and face the facts about uncharted. If it was mainstream vita would have at least taken off.
I wish it was a rip-off too.
I'd actually enjoy playing it. The demo made it feel really easy to just button mash in order to win. Which after a bit, I was able to do just that and then use the super special you have to use.
Smash you can play that way, but you wind up doing a ton of dodging and ducking in order to survive. In this game I felt like you could just constantly pummel the opponent then use your special. And not knowing who is winning was annoying.
Good first try. But from the sales I don't think they're going to see a second.
Yes. They wish it was MORE of a Smash Bros. rip-off.......because THEN it would actually be GOOD. *slaps knee*
They wish they could rip off the good gameplay as well as the concept. C'est la vie
