GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - EA on Wii U: From unprecedented to non-existent

Big day in just a few hours. Will this Nintendo Direct continue the recent trend of interesting and entertaining presentations? Being this close to E3, I certainly hope so! Join us here at 10 AM East Coast to check out all the action live! See you in a few, short hours.

Last night's End of Day thought now seems more relevant than ever, which is not something I wanted to see happen. Third party struggles are always a struggle for Nintendo, but the Wii U was dealt a major negative blow today. Just incase you missed the news, EA has announced that they do not have any Wii U projects in development at this time.

I'm reminded of another dark time in Nintendo history. Remember when Square-Enix (Squaresoft) stopped making games for Nintendo platforms? That was nearly 10 long years without Square-Enix support. It is still incredibly insane to think that the two companies just ignored each other for so long. Thankfully, those days have come and gone.

Could this announcement from EA be the start of something similar? While this move only pertains to the Wii U, when was the last time you saw an EA title on the 3DS? They aren't exactly pumping out support for that device. Perhaps there's a title or two in the works, but I wouldn't be expecting all that much.

A lot of Nintendo fans have said that EA's lack of support on Wii U doesn't matter. No one buys their games for Nintendo platforms, so why would we miss them? While many of the readers on this site may not be happy with EA's output on Nintendo platforms, there's no denying that they have major brands. We're not just talking about big-name FPS titles, we're also going to see all sports titles skip the Wii U. That's not to mention more expanded audience games like The Sims.

I bought quite a number of EA Wii games when they were pumping them out. I actually bought every Tiger Woods game on Wii because of the control mechanic. I went with the PS3 this year because there was no Wii/Wii U option, which really caused me to feel a sting. Nothing at all against the PS3/360 versions, but I had such great memories of the Wii outings. I was looking forward to continuing that on Wii U.

Who knows, maybe I'll be able to do that at some point in the future. As for right now, EA's ship has sailed to other pastures. It's clear that something big went on behind the scenes that we aren't fully privy to. From unprecedented to absolutely nothing speaks volumes of Wii U's issues, but I also think there's something else causing issues. Either way, I'm afraid that a move like this from such a big publisher could push other third parties to make the same decision.

What do you think of EA's move? Do you simply not care and are happy to see them go? Do you believe this could be the start of bigger problems for the Wii U? Leave a comment and let us know.
