The problem with fun

Are developers being held back by trying to create games that are fun?

You would think that a developer’s main mission in game creation would be to make a title that is fun. I personally feel that fun is a key element to a game’s success, and it can overtake any other issues that a title has. With that said, what sort of games do you get if a developer stops focusing on fun and starts honing in on a message? Will we come off with a better experience in the long run?
