The creation of a special Web browser for the Wii console might very well be appealing to Wii gamers, but its presence on the Wii might aslso help expand the appeal of the platform beyond gamers.

Due to be released on December 22 as a free beta by developer Opera Software, the browser’s final version will be available in March 2007.

Analysts and other industry observers have noted that game companies have been eager to make their consoles into devices used by everyone in the family, not just game players. Toward that end, Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have folded in other capabilities, such as DVD viewing, that would broaden the appeal of the devices.
