If there was every any proof that Nintendo isn’t artificially creating Wii shortages, this would be it. According to various analysts, Nintendo is losing bigtime due to the lack of consoles. You don’t sell consoles, you don’t sell software, and you don’t make money. Based on the current demand for the platform and the software that would be sold with it, analysts say that Nintendo is losing somewhere around $1 billion this holiday season. If you thought Nintendo was doing this on purpose, you might want to rethink that now.

The NYTimes article also has an interview with one disgruntled Wii purchasing-hopeful. She some choice words to say, found in the full article.
