Dear Reader:
Here's a distrubing fact about gaming magazines
This little blurb of information comes from Dan Hsu, former EGM staffer…
“We’d have to overprint every issue by hundreds of thousands of copies in order to make a certain amount of sales at newsstands, because so many copies get lost in the distribution process. A 40% sell-through may sound horribly wasteful to you (it is), but that’s considered a sales success to us. 50%? Horray! Now…think of what our financials looked like when 60%+ of the copies we paid to have printed (roughly $1 per issue) get thrown out.”
I had no idea that magazine distribution was such a horrible process. I don’t understand how losses like that were deemed acceptable. That situation surely doesn’t help with gaming magazines, considering how readership is shrinking every month.
