Posted over at Infendo:

The new issue of the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine claims that Wii will be able to output in 720p HD.

From the magazine’s Wii Launch feature: “At the time of going to print, Wii games will output in 720i and 720p — 720i is your standard TV picture, 720p is a higher-quality signal …”

Last time I checked, 480i was a standard TV picture and 720i technically doesn’t exist.

Could this be the last secret we’ve been hearing about? Or is ONM wrong again?

Thanks to MisterInvisible for the Tip!

*UPDATE*

It was a simple typo, clearly it was meant to say 480i and 480p, as should be clear by the fact it goes on about your TV’s standard resolution. The proper text should read:

“At the time of going to print, Wii games will output in 720i and 720p — 720i is your standard TV picture, 720p is a higher-quality signal…”

All it was, as I say, was a simple typo. It wasn’t an attempt to make people think the Wii can display in hi-def (it can’t), and it wasn’t an attempt to get the magazine more popularity. It was a simple mistake that somehow managed to bypass everyone (including NCL themselves, who had to approve the article), and Chandra from the mag already addressed this earlier today on our forums.

Just thought I’d clear that up before people start getting out of control again and accusing us of all sorts. Just to clarify - the Wii can output in 480i and 480p, and that’s it. We made a typo and there will no doubt be a correction in the next issue. Nobody’s perfect, and sometimes the odd error will slip through the net - that’s just the way things go.

Despite this, no doubt this will now be followed by hundreds of comments from ill-wishers saying “ZOMG ONM lied 2 us agen, dey r da suxxors”. So enjoy. :-)
