Saling The World: Killzone 2, Professor Layton Top U.S. Real-Time Charts

Gamasutra’s weekly column, “Saling The World”, covers the top five real-time Amazon.com sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week’s charts, with data taken from April 23rd, 2009, find Monster Hunter G and Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Sora no Tankentai heading Japanese sales, while Killzone 2 and Professor Layton maintain their popularity stateside.

Data for “Saling The World” comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii

North America: 1. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 2. Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout (Ubisoft), 3. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 4. My Fitness Coach (Ubisoft), 5. Wii Play (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Monster Hunter G Starter Package (Capcom), 2. Monster Hunter G (Capcom), 3. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 4. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 5. Taiko no Tatsujin Wii (Namco).

UK: 1. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 2. Wii Play (Nintendo), 3. My Fitness Coach (Ubisoft), 4. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 5. Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party (Ubisoft).

A temporary price drop places Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout among this week’s top Wii sellers in the United States. Gold’s Gym joins fellow Ubisoft workout title My Fitness Coach in the top five, as Wii Fit remains the region’s top seller.

Capcom’s online action-RPG Monster Hunter G debuts strong in Japan, meanwhile, capturing the region’s top two sales positions. Wii Fit is pushed to third place in Japanese sales, while Mario Kart Wii and Taiko no Tatsujin close out the regional charts.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. Halo 3 (Microsoft), 2. Major League Baseball 2K9 (2K Sports), 3. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 4. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom), 5. Fallout 3 (Bethesda).

Japan: 1. Tom Clancy’s HAWX (Ubisoft), 2. Death Smiles (Cave), 3. Halo Wars — Special Edition (Microsoft), 4. Death Smiles — Special Edition (Cave), 5. The Last Remnant (Square Enix).

UK: 1. FIFA 09 (EA Sports), 2. Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar), 3. Left 4 Dead (EA Games), 4. Fable II (Microsoft), 5. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom).

A discounted Halo 3 finishes in North America’s top Xbox 360 sales spot for the second week in a row, edging out new competition from the price-dropped Major League Baseball 2K9. Call of Duty: World at War moves up a place in this week’s rankings, while Fallout 3 returns after an extended absence at fifth.

In Japan, Tom Clancy’s HAWX finishes first in its debut week, as Cave’s anticipated shoot’em-up Death Smiles occupies two spaces in the weekly rankings.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Killzone 2 (SCEA), 2. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom), 3. LittleBigPlanet (SCEA), 4. MLB 09: The Show (SCEA), 5. Valkyria Chronicles (Sega).

Japan: 1. Killzone 2 (SCEI), 2. Tears to Tiara — Special Edition (Aqua Plus), 3. Senjou no Valkyria — PlayStation 3 the Best (Sega), 4. Demon’s Souls (SCEI), 5. BioHazard 5 (Capcom).

UK: 1. LittleBigPlanet (SCEE), 2. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom), 3. Killzone 2 (SCEE), 4. FIFA 09 (EA Sports), 5. Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar).

Killzone 2 again takes top honors in North American PlayStation 3 software sales, as Resident Evil 5 trails close behind. LittleBigPlanet rallies to finish third in this week’s results, while Valkyria Chronicles hangs on at fifth place.

Killzone 2 also makes a big impression in Japan, where it tops the regional charts in its premiere week. Senjou no Valkyria falls to third place, as Tears to Tiara returns to take second after a recent drop in price.

PlayStation 2
North America: 1. Samurai Shodown Anthology (SNK Playmore), 2. Ultimate Ninja 4: Naruto Shippuden (Namco Bandai), 3. Guitar Hero: Metallica (Activision), 4. God of War (SCEA), 5. Guitar Hero: World Tour (Activision).

Japan: 1. Amagami (Enterbrain), 2. Anubis: Zone of the Enders Special Edition — Konami Dendou Selection (Konami), 3. Okami — PlayStation 2 The Best (Capcom), 4. Kanuchi: Kuroki Tsubasa no Shou (Idea Factory), 5. Shinobido Imashime — Spike the Best (Spike).

UK: 1. SingStar: Queen (SCEE), 2. SingStar: ABBA (SCEE), 3. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Bundle (Activision), 4. FIFA 09 (EA Sports), 5. SingStar: Legends (SCEE).

SNK’s Samurai Shodown Anthology remains an unstoppable force in North America, finishing as the region’s biggest PS2 seller for the fifth week in a row. The recently released Ultimate Ninja 4: Naruto Shippuden takes second place in this week’s results, leaving Guitar Hero: Metallica, God of War, and Guitar Hero: World Tour in its wake.

PC
North America: 1. Left 4 Dead (EA Games), 2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Blizzard), 3. World of Warcraft Battle Chest (Blizzard), 4. Fallout 3 (Bethesda), 5. Empire: Total War (Sega).

Japan: 1. Monster Hunter Frontier Online Season 5.0 Premium Package (Capcom), 2. The Last Remnant (Square Enix), 3. SimCity 4 Deluxe (EA Games), 4. Final Fantasy XI: The Vana’diel Collection (Square Enix), 5. Civilization 4 Deluxe Pack (Cyber Front).

Left 4 Dead pushes past last week’s chart champion World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King to capture the top spot in this week’s North American PC software sales rankings. Demigod drops out of chart range after spending only one week in the top five, while Fallout 3 and Empire: Total War return to take fourth and fifth.
