Devolver Digital co-founder says Nintendo fans more open to "interesting concepts and gameplay"
Time to path ourselves on the back
Devolver Digital is one of the biggest indie publishers out there, and they’ve got a serious collection of hits under their belt. If there’s any studio out there that knows indie gaming and has their fingers on the pulse of indie fans, it would be Devolver.
In a recent interview with Games Industry, Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie says he’s heard about indies skipping the Xbox and PlayStation side of things with their efforts, and it’s all because those audiences don’t seem to be all that interested in what indies are offering. According to Lowrie, the situation is quite different with Nintendo.
**“They’ve (Nintendo) created an ecosystem – and therefore a user base – that is really open to interesting concepts and gameplay ideas. The PlayStation and Xbox user, for as long as I’ve been doing this… there’s a lot of people that still like indie games, don’t get me wrong. Cult of the Lamb has done very well on those platforms. But I think the large majority of those people buy those platforms to show off what they can really do. They’re looking at Destiny. They’re looking at Helldivers. They’re looking at Starfield. They definitely push those.
I think the platforms themselves all are really strong believers in indie games. They really do push them. I think on the other end, the consumers – as big as they might be – there’s still a smaller portion than we would like on Xbox and PlayStation that are open to looking at a pixel art platformer and going, ‘I’ll give this a shot.’“**
It’s wild to think that Nintendo sits at the forefront of indie gaming nowadays, at least when it comes to consoles. Nintendo started this push back in the Wii days, and they’ve only grown efforts since. Now indies are a huge part of Nintendo’s gaming catalog, and it’s clear Nintendo fans are just as engaged with that side of the industry.
Nintendo looking to add 3 more women to board of directors
Ladies, do I have at least 3 numbers right?
Nintendo shared a wealth of information during their fiscal year 2023/2024 report, giving us all sorts of sales updates, install base figures, revenue data and more. Turns out they also have some plans to expand their board of directors with 4 new members, 3 of them being women.
Nintendo has said multiple times in the past that they’re looking to bring more women into the fold, and they’ve slowly but surely been doing that. In the latest example of Nintendo staying true to their word, the company has nominated 3 women to join their board of directors. If all is approved, the trio will join on June 27th, 2024.
The lineup of new board members includes Miyoko Demay, Eiko Osawa and Keiko Akashi. You can see their professional/corporate history in the breakdown below.

Super Famicom prototype pulls in $3 million bid via online auction only to mysteriously vanish
Are Nintendo ninjas to blame?
A holy grail of Nintendo collectibles made its way online via Yahoo! Auctions Japan, only to mysteriously disappear a day later.
Out of nowhere, a listing for a Super Famicom prototype made its way onto Yahoo! Auctions Japan, and it instantly garnered all sorts of attention. This is the kind of Nintendo collectible that you rarely ever see, as it’s not even clear how it made it from Nintendo’s inner sanctum to the public’s hands. Obviously Nintendo doesn’t want it out there, which only adds to its rarity, mystique, and of course, value.
The major differences in this Super Famicom prototype versus the final design are the red power button, a headphone jack and a volume dial on the side, and an expansion port on the front. It certainly would have been nice to have that headphone jack/volume dial on the final console, but for whatever reason, Nintendo decided to ditch those ideas for the retail release.
The Yahoo! Auction for this prototype managed to climb ridiculously high in a very short amount of time. Within 24 hours of posting, the auction had reached an astronomical $3 million bid…and then poof, it was gone. We have no word on why the listing was yanked, nor do we know if it’ll return. Perhaps the powers that be had the listing pulled, or maybe the person selling the prototype got cold feet. Whatever the reason, one major piece of Nintendo history has up and vanished, and we can only hope it pops up again soon.

Over the years, Nintendo has released a series of classic controllers for the Switch that go along with their various Switch Online offerings. Here in the states, Switch Online members could purchase a variety of legacy controllers, and that included NES-style designs. Over in Japan, the situation has been exactly the same, but with the NES controller swapped for a Famicom design.
Ever since these controllers launched, the only way to get them was by being a Switch Online member. If you were a member, you had a chance to buy them through Nintendo’s store as long as stock was available. Apparently, at least in Japan, that’s going to change in the very near future.
Nintendo has announced that the Switch Online Famicom controllers are soon going to be put up for sale to the general public. The kickoff comes July 18th, 2024, no doubt to coincide with the release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. Of course, now the question is whether Nintendo will do the same for the NES controllers in NA/EU. We’ll keep an eye out for that information!
Pokémon X Hatsune Miku "Project Voltage" collaboration gets another supplemental illustration
The art just keeps coming
A few months back, we reported on the collaboration between The Pokémon Company and the renowned Japanese Vocaloid, Hatsune Miku, titled “Project Voltage 18 Types 18 Songs.” This project promised 18 songs and accompanying illustrations, each representing a unique Pokémon type.
The eighteenth and final illustration was released back in late September, but it turns out there’s even more art to look forward to. These supplemental art pieces will release on random dates, but they’ll continue to showcase Hatsune Miku and Pokémon together. Along with that, the art will spotlight some other Vocaloid idols as well.
Today’s art is titled “18 / Voltage,“ and it was created by artist Kiya Machi. Will this be the final release in this series? Only time will tell!
If you’re a longtime Nintendo fan, you no doubt remember certain launches that were hampered by supply issues. The Wii was hit hard by low stock for years and years, and the Switch went through something similar. Nintendo knows this was quite a rough situation for consumers, and they’re looking to avoid that fate with Switch’s successor.
In recent years, multiple tech companies have had trouble securing the parts they need to create their hardware. Even Nintendo had mentioned in past years that they struggled to find companies who had what they needed and could manufacture the Switch at a decent rate. Thankfully, it appears those supply issues have cleared up in 2024, and Nintendo expects smooth sailing ahead.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa would very much like to keep stock issues a thing of the past when it comes to the Switch’s successor, and he believes the company is in good shape going forward to produce the units they need. You can read his comments on the matter below.
(Please note that this is a fan translation of the Japanese transcripts of the Q&A, courtesy of Nicolas10111 on Reddit.)
“Regarding the supply of the successor model to Nintendo Switch, we have not yet talked about the release timing, so we cannot give a specific answer, but at this point there is no shortage of supply of semiconductor parts, etc., as there was until the year before last. We do not anticipate that the supply of such products will become a major problem when a successor model is released.”
Nintendo admits they're focusing on Switch successor, but new Switch titles are coming
Not all next-gen yet
With Nintendo officially announcing that they’ll pull back the curtain on the Switch’s successor this fiscal year, we can officially consider the Switch as riding off into the sunset. That said, there’s still some life left in the system, and Nintendo will be providing some of that support.
During Nintendo’s investor Q&A following their fiscal results, one investor noted that the Switch software lineup for this year seems rather light. They asked if this was due to focusing on development for the Switch successor, to which Nintendo president Shuntaro Furkawa responded with the following:
(Please note that this is a fan translation of the Japanese transcripts of the Q&A, courtesy of Nicolas10111 on Reddit.)
“Since it takes years to develop a new successor, it is true development resources are being considered for it at the moment. However we’re still developing new software for the Switch so please look forward to the June Direct.”
So, while Nintendo is up front about working on games for the Switch’s successor, they’re not quite done with Switch yet. We’ll have to hold out until June to see what new Nintendo titles will be the platform’s last hurrah, and let’s hope they’re big ones!
Check Out Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex and more from Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Twilight Masquerade
New deck sneak peek!
The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Twilight Masquerade expansion welcomes players to Kitakami, a land where people and Pokémon live harmoniously with nature. Of course, while they might live harmoniously, you can still enjoy fierce Pokémon TCG battles! If anything, the fearsome Pokémon ex and highly useful ACE SPEC cards ensure that plenty of dramatic matches lie ahead. And as always, the artwork is also a journey in and of itself, offering a fresh perspective on some of your favorite Pokémon.
Now, let’s take a peek at some of the memorable art and cards you’ll find in the Scarlet & Violet—Twilight Masquerade expansion, officially available May 24, 2024.
Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex
Artist Yano Keiji created a stunning, fierce, fiery Pokémon with their vision of Ogerpon in its Hearthflame Mask. Opponents will feel the burn with its Wrathful Hearth attack that does 20 damage for each damage counter on Ogerpon. Conjure a conflagration with the Dynamic Blaze attack, which dictates that if your opponent’s Active Pokémon is an Evolution Pokémon, the attack does 140 damage on top of the standard 140 damage—a whopping 280 damage in all! The caveat is that you have to discard all Energy from Ogerpon after utilizing this tactic. Additionally, Ogerpon has defensive capabilities: as long as it’s on your Bench, it can prevent all damage done to it by attacks (both your own and those of your opponent). Like all Pokémon ex, your opponent gets to claim two Prize cards when Ogerpon is Knocked Out, but it’s well worth the sacrifice to have this smoldering Mask Pokémon at your side.
To see a sneak peek at even more cards, check out the full feature on Pokemon.com.
