RUMOR - GameStop to post Switch allotment numbers on brick-and-mortar store doors

We brought you the news of GameStop's tight initial shipment of the Switch, meaning grabbing a preorder from them could prove difficult. Now another rumor comes in, not from our source, that points to GameStop trying to inform their customers of stock as early as possible.

According to a source at NeoGAF, stores will be posting allotment numbers on their front doors after closing time. The day isn't specified, but Thursday night would make the most sense. You would want to line up Friday morning after the presentation, rather than GameStop holding back on preorders all through Friday, then posting store allotments on Friday for Saturday preorder.

Now that's quite a bind for people that want to purchase from GameStop physical locations. Do you rush to your GameStop, check out the numbers and hang there? If you do, you'll be watching the Switch presentation in the cold, at night, on your phone! Perhaps if your GameStop has a few people lined up, you could make yourself a little Switch presentation party!

This scarcity shit Nintendo keeps pulling is only working because the fanboys let it happen. Everyone is so eager to get the new system immediately and they play right into it. I'll probably attempt to get on Amazon and place a preorder if they're available but I'm not going to make an effort beyond that. I can get it later. That crap we saw with Wii, Amiibo and NES Classic..... I'm done with it.

My plan, right now (subject to change as more information comes in):

Watch the presentation on Thursday night. By the time it ends, it should be a bit before midnight in my time zone. At this point, I honestly don't know if I'll be able to fall asleep, just due to sheer excitement. So if I do fall asleep at, say, 2AM, I don't know if I'll be able to awaken at 6AM to make the trek over to GameStop.

I might just grab my lawnchair after the presentation and head directly over to GameStop, napping there through the night. The chair is quite comfy, and the weather forecast for my area that morning looks pretty agreeable.

With Zelda at launch, I'm not one to take chances.

Not a good sign at all if you're hoping for plentiful launch day stock.

It's really bad sign of things to come. Forget the general consumer and fans, informed fans won't even all get to play Switch at launchSad

I guess living in a small town in a small country pays off at times. I've pre-ordered 2 of them months ago. As of now, I'm still probably the only one who has done so in my town.

Best of luck to my overseas brothers and sisters, I hope none of you get left out.

Same here. That whole "preorders open at a specific" date is completely unknown here in germany.

Preorders start whenever the first person asks.

Early signs showing NIntendo has no faith in the Switch and are going to only produce a low amount to create buzz through low shipping.

Man, they've never used this tactic before. And it has never pissed its fan base off before either.

500k Switches Day 1 - WorldWide. Good luck and enjoy paying $1,000 on ebay for one.

Just got back from GameStop, the manager there told me the same thing. I'm really worried I won't be able to get a preorder anywhere. I will try to get one online, but god I'm anxious.

I'm liking this less and less.

I'm waiting until summer before I get one. Not playing the launch game anymore after what I went through on Wii.

Despite sounding lame, waiting is perhaps the better call for a new console.

- You can see if the first line works correctly.
- A lot more games, especially new games come out later than sooner.
- The console gets cheaper, in Nintendo's case especially if it loses momentum.
- Future updates that smooth the UI.
- Etc.

If anything a consumer may get more benefits by waiting than buying at launch. But as human beings as we are, we have the impulse to jump on things while they're hot, since nowadays people shift from one trend to another way faster than a couple of decades ago.

Your post reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rIJmGj4g-s

While I'm probably getting one at launch, I do see this point of view and agree with it.

It's not like I was thinking of that song.... Not all...

YES

That one is my very mantra... Italy is so eager on price cuts I got my Wii U (Premium) like 100 Euros discounted with New Super Mario Bros. Wii U at ONLY 5 months after launch!

Hopefully they do preorders for NA Amazon. Will be the first console I have ever bought at launch (unless BotW really is delayed and there isnt much else at launch).

Wasn't there a rumor about factories in China firing up production of the NX and it was around half a year ago? It seems like I remember hearing that Nintendo was getting right to production, and that made me think shortages should be pretty silly and more than likely purposeful. But I don't know... there have been lots of rumors.

I'm looking to order my Switch from Best Buy, Amazon, or WalMart because I have a strict policy of avoiding Gamestop. Guess I'll just have to pay close attention for the 1.283 second window in which Amazon allows me to preoder it.

Don't believe anything you've read on the internet that didn't come straight from Nintendo.

Actually, just don't believe anything you read on the Internet.

Just called my local GameStop. He said that he would learn his allotment numbers sometime Thursday (before the event, since they close earlier than that) and would indeed be posting them on the door. He said they'd start taking reserves at 10AM on Friday morning. I am going to do the whole get-there-at-4AM thing I did with the Wii preorders, unless there are already lines on Thursday night.

Never underestimate Nintendo's ability to completely botch the launch of their hardware in one way or another, eh?

From what I can find though, the initial shipment of Switch is supposed to be close to double that of the PS4... hopefully that's a good sign.

I think people are freaking out for no reason. Pre-orders will always sell out to the hardcore fans. I couldn't even get a Wii U and I went in within the first hour to 4 different stores. Plus, the 2 million units on day one doubles the PS4's 1 million that they sold. I think they are fine.

Well, in this case it sorta makes sense. They have a loooot more Wii-Us than they can get rid of, right? Not strange if they do not want that to happen again, even if it'll stuck for a lot of people at the moment.

I do think the Switch will take off pretty greatly, so, I think a quick-ish restocking will come.
