Dear Reader:
3DS launch lacks Mario, Luigi and Link, makes history
• Nintendo Entertainment System - Super Mario Bros.
• Super NES - Super Mario World
• Gameboy - Super Mario Land
• Nintendo 64 -Super Mario 64
• Virtual Boy - Mario’s Tennis
• Game Boy Advance - Super Mario Advance
• GameCube - Luigi’s Mansion
• Nintendo DS - Super Mario 64 DS
• Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
As you can see, Nintendo has had a history with Mario and Luigi when it comes to platform launches. They threw Link in there for the Wii, but he’s still a big-name character. The 3DS doesn’t really have a major player right out of the gate, as far as characters go. Nintendogs was a huge success, and I’m sure Nintendogs + Cats will follow in those footsteps. Pilotwings Resort is a sequel to a long-running Nintendo franchise, but it’s not exactly their most well-known. Steel Diver is unique, a brand-new I.P. from Nintendo right out of the gate.
I’m really pumped for Nintendo’s launch titles. For me, I see it as one of the best lineups ever. I love Mario and Zelda, but let’s not blow our wad right at the start! I think the funniest thing is how much fans were complaining about Nintendo’s lack of interest in new I.P.s. Now we get a brand-new franchise at the start of the 3DS, and all anyone can do is complain about no Mario or Zelda. Sometimes there’s just no pleasing people!
