Nintendo announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct for August 31st, 2023. That Direct will bring us 15 minutes of gameplay, details and insight for Mario’s next big adventure, and we may end up learning about some in-game purchases as well.
The ESRB has rated Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and not surprisingly, the game has come away with an E for Everyone rating. What’s more interesting is the fact that the ESRB shows that Super Mario Bros. Wonder will include in-game purchases.
At this time, we have no idea what these in-game purchases will be, but there’s a wide range of possibilities. Most people go right to paid DLC expansions when seeing this phrasing, and that could certainly be possible. That said, a mention of in-game purchases could mean nothing more than Super Mario Bros. Wonder including a button that takes you to the Switch eShop for a purchase of Switch Online.
Hopefully Nintendo explains these in-game purchases on August 31st. If/when they do, we’ll give you the complete breakdown.

Why would they do that when the game's eShop listing specifically mentions it only supporting local co-op?

The game's official Japanese website mentions online play, so it seems there's something going on!
